High mileage?
Featured on BIMMERPOST.com I know there is a thread in the ‘normal’ 3-series thread but wanted to know if there were any nuances with the GT. Appreciate the data folks! |

Same car for me and I am at 60K. I still have my '06 TL with 180K going strong ready for my youngest and I plan on trying to get at least 150K out of the 328. I have never owned a BMW, but in my experience almost any car that is well cared for will last.....that said my wife had a Maxima years ago that was clearly a lemon lol.

I was hesitant to buy a BMW due to what I've heard about reliability and cost, but I know more than a few owners that have driven their BMW's over 200K miles and been happy. I am fortunate that I am fairly handy and my brother and a good friend are mechanics.....both told me NOT to buy a German car lol. Neither one wanted to change the oil until I showed them it was actually easier than with my 2006 TL.

My '07 Altima was like that, having to remove a tire to access the oil filter. My '99 Cougar was worse. The first time I changed it took me a half hour of searching to find the filter, and then I had to make like a contortionist to change it. Changing the BMW oil filter is three minutes start to finish.

My wife has a 2015 MDX and it's pretty much the same as the TL. I did the maintenance on her car this past year since I had more free time due to the pandemic. One oil change was enough though, she can go back to Valvoline lol.

Eventually I found a way I could move the wheel trim aside just enough to get my arm in to unscrew it, but technically the wheel was supposed to be removed. And changing the headlight bulbs required an entire afternoon of front end removal. Yet, I could change the serpentine belt in about 15 minutes with no free space to work with in the engine bay whatsoever. Go figure.

Oh man if you guys think honda and nissan oil changes are bad, try doing it on the american stuff... gmc terrains , newer dodge rams , etc ... terrible filter locations.
the japanese stuff is far easier imo, and if theres a leak, you dont need to remove 147 screws to get the plastics underneath off *cough* germans *cough* |

Reconsidering keeping the vehicle long term
I have been very happy with my 2015 328 GT, and was planning on keeping it until the wheels fell off, but I am starting to reconsider. It's my understanding that BMW connected will be gone as of Feb 2022 for all vehicles prior to the model year 2017. This is due to the discontinuation of 3G. This means no SOS, or theft recovery system, let alone any of the remote systems such as door lock, unlock, etc. It's pretty disappointing that BMW doesn't sound like they are going to offer any kind of retrofit for this, making any car technologically obsolete at anything older than 5 years. For what we pay for these cars, I think that is pretty crummy when some of us have been promised (and paid for) some of these services - up to 2024 in my case.

If you were driving a vintage car of any make you wouldn't have any of those features anyway. I didn't buy my GT because it had them, and won't give it up for the lack of them.

You can't blame BMW for the phasing out of 3G, that's on the telecom industry. The same thing happened when 2G was phased out, and upgrades to 4G were offered then. They weren't cheap, but neither was upgrading to a new iPhone.

I bought my F34 N26 ar 32,000 miles and now have 93,000. No major issues, of course the timing chain is a concern but I don't hear any noise from the engine bay. I've only used Amsoil since I got it and changed out every 5000mi. Just a couple months ago I changed the water pump and thermostat as PM. Brakes and all 4 shocks have been replaced along with spark plugs. Just basic maintenance items.
I'm fairly good at doing small things, changed my plugs, belt, oil, and tension pulley. I have an extra coil ready for when one goes out. I could be on borrowed time with the timing chain but will probably wait until I hear whining. My car 90% stays within 1500-3300 rpms due to mostly highway driving and I baby it too. Let it sit after every start for a minute for the oil and transmission oil to cycle up. May be over board but I want it to last until 200K at least. Love the car. |

Change the timing chain tensioner. It's not expensive, easy enough to DIY. The current version, in use since 2016, applies more pressure on the guide, which reduces the chances of a stretched chain jumping a sprocket.
