Driving with no key in cabin
This morning came first frost. (I managed to get to work with s-drive and all year tyres, needless to say - but that is a different topic)
Went out with key in pocket, started the beauty up to defrost, thought I would try and leave with key still in my pocket and see what happened - it stays running. I thought it would cut out. What happens if you try to drive off if no key in cabin - anyone tried this? |

It will still run.
Not sure about auto start stop being enabled. But it will run without key, however problem would be at other end trying to start it up I have almost walked off with car locked and engine running - yes the 6 pot diesel can be that quiet lol. |

I started mine on sunday morning then locked it and went inside for a few minutes just to see if engine would stop but it didnt.
I am curious to know if the car could be driven away without the key in the cabin. |

Yes it's fcuking stupid. My wife dropped me at the pub yesterday and drove home but I inadvertently had the keys still in my pocket. She gets home, switches off the car and goes to the house. She then realises she can't get in the house because I locked up and she hasn't got her own keys. Goes back to the car which of course won't start because the key (me) is three miles away. So she had to wait in the car, in the rain, for me to get a taxi back complete with keys.
In fairness the I-Drive was flashing a big warning about the key being absent but women don't look at things like that.

the engine wont stop if the key has left. I believe for safety purposes its supposed to stay running.
but once you turn it off, it wont turn back on

That is pretty dumb on BMWs part. Why don't they use the same technology that stops car moving with door open, it is just logic as equipment is all there I wonder if that can be coded for those with the know how |

Start up, radio mute, rear demister on, seat heating on, wheel heating on, lock, back inside for porridge, shower etc. in 30 minutes you have a toasty, full-defrosted vehicle. I'm sure someone could smash a window and drive off but it's pretty unlikely and I keep the key in my pocket. It would be better if you couldn't engage drive or reverse without the key though.

The thief would have to break into the car so you could claim that it was not running at the time it was stolen. Plus you would have all the keys so the insurer would find it hard to disprove you. |

Indeed - there's a clear safety reason for not shutting the engine off when it loses contact with the key. For instance, imagine the key fob battery going flat while you're on the motorway.

"Loss or damage caused by theft or attempted theft or fire, if your car has been unlocked and unattended or the keys have been left in or on your car." So... Unlocked and unattended is a no-no. Leaving the keys in or on the car is a no-no. Nothing about leaving it running. Looks like I'm covered for my early morning defrost!

Sorry but BMW cannot be blamed for that! The audible and visual warnings from the dash are impossible to miss! It's huge and tells you the key is not in the car!! |

That's what I do. It's not covered if left unlocked but (it seems) ok if left locked and running.

I once left the car running in the middle of London (Tower Bridge), thinking I switched it off as we made our way to a nearby restaurant. Unbeknown the car has been on all this while. Returned 3hrs later and it's still there with music, headlight etc all on. This shows London is still safe. "Wishful thinking"
