Geneva 2013: F30 M Sport Active Hybrid 3
BIMMERPOST NEWS Geneva 2013: F30 M Sport Active Hybrid 3 To re-inject a dose of OEM goodness after seeing all the tuner produced BMWs, here is a F30 M Sport (Active Hybrid 3), looking great in Glacier Silver. Nothing fancy or new, just good ole factory OEM-ness. For the rest of our earlier coverage see BIMMERPOST.com |

That is one beautiful looking car. It is perhaps the prettiest 3 series sedan BMW has made. Too bad that the F30's build quality is far inferior to the E90's though.

What makes you say that? My wife and I have had both and I respectively disagree. If anything, the build quality has improved.

As long as the F30 is an M-Sport. The Modern Line and others just look busy from the front, too busy. As someone who has done an extensive test drive and will continue my extensive test drive today, I can say I would not trade my E90 for an F30. Like you said, the build quality doesn't feel the same. Also, the steering on the F30 is vague and unsure. While my E90 with sport package is in a different league. Although the F30 is bigger the interior feels cramped. The door pocket intrudes where my left leg wants to be and the footwell feels smaller. My car had been in for warranty repair, now the 3rd time is two weeks so I'm getting to know the F30 real well. The F30 is more like the girl you would date but wouldn't marry. Looks good, but when you really look deeper the elements just aren't there. |

I will agree that the AH3 in M-sport is a good looking car. I get compliments on mine all the time. I wouldn't change a thing about it. |

lol @ e9X owners knocking build quality and driving qualities of f30, no one would have EVER expected that...
To continue that ignorance (and/or arrogance), the e90 is FAR inferior to my e46! lol On topic, this isn't a newly released car, there are quite a few f30 AH M-Sport owners on the board, there is a white one with an M-Performance lip that I have as the backround on my computer...

I love me the E-series models; and the luxurious appointments for the 5 series and up F-models are just baller - the F10 M5 is really nice
I can definitely tell BMW employed the most cost cutting measures ever in the new 3-series But I saw a F30 m sport in mineral grey w all the bmw performance goodies on it and all the black trim and it looked nice but it just doesn't feel sport I feel BMW is trying to become more like VW and if that is the case bring us a gti killer and make the exhaust and engine noise and steering feel like riding on rails come back |

I've driven several F30 in different configuration... M Sport, Sport Line, Luxury line, and I had the intention to swap my E90 for an F30 and was ready to sign a check. However after test driving it, and being so disappointed I just extended my factory warranty for another 3 years... When you sit in a e90, after the being in the f30, the e90 feels so much more high end, sporty and luxurious... Here is a few items that have regressed on F30 (And I am surprised we don't hear these more ... maybe because it's a BMW forum...) - Suspension is too soft (even in M Sport) - Direction is too soft - Sport seats are uncomfortable and don't hold you as well as in e90 - Rust present under the seats from delivery ! - Lots of cheap hard plastic on the center console between the seats... They could have covered it with a trim... bad savings... - Door not covered fully with leather like on e90 (Looks like they improved this on 3 GT) - Flimsy sunroof cover, which looks plasticy and doesn't have anymore the safety option to not leave the roof open.. - Driving position is terrible, and the steering wheel is always hidding part of the dash (and is too big still !) - Car doesn't feel like a sports sedan anymore.. feels like driving a boat - Sunblinds covered with cheap plastic instead of nice fabric matching the roof (even in high speced cars, and M sport flavour) - Design wise the split of the hood with the ugly line, is definitely linked to cost as well... (Don't tell me it's for pedestrian safety, all other cars don't have this ugly design) - Much more road noise inside - navigation voice is not clear (difficult to understand especially when the radio/music is on). The voice in e90 was much clearer and music volume was lowered automatically when voice direction are given - I drive controller in f30 feels plasticky and cheap compared to e90... Hopefully they will improve some of these in the next model years, or for LCI... right now I would go to see Audi probably if I was forced to change my car. And that's a shame given that I am more an BMW fan than an Audi one... Basically the F30 has lost everything that was making it special compared to other brands... And it's now even inferior in some aspects... I think it's not a bad looking car in M sport version, but just not enough to make the difference with other brands anymore... Do the bigger wheels and tires of the msport pack reduce mpgs?

I have owned both, not test drove both.
Your comments seem to be opinions of changes and not much relative to build quality. I do agree the drive is not the same and actually the F30 feels more like my E60 did (bigger and softer than the E90). However, Our F30 seems very solid and has not developed any creaks or rattles that our E90s encountered early on. These are just my feelings. |

Probably, but not as much as just a heavy foot. I did some research a while back, and came to the conclusion that every extra 1" in wheel diameter reduces combined mpg by about 1mpg. The f/r 403M wheels and tires weigh an extra 5/6 combined pounds each vs the 400M versions. I opted for the 400M on my AH3 M-sport. You can click in my sig for examples of my mpg.

What I find funny is that I can't seem to find any f30 owners complaint about the car being more cheap or inferior compared to their past e9x. Those who really complain are those who doesn't who the f30.
Driving a loaner f30 is not the same as owning one. It's an exact repeat of history when the e90 replaced the e46. I still remember back then when all the owners of the e46 bashed the e90 saying it looked like a boat and obviously complained that it was INFERIOR and rather keep the e46 and when it comes due they will go look elsewhere. It's human nature! |

Overall build quality really has gone downhill ever since the E46's, and it seems like a continuing trend with the F30, I drove the Caddy ATS last week to see what everyone was talking about and I swear that car reminded me much more of what the e46 M3 felt like in driving characteristics, Precise/Agile/direct etc.....! |
