BM3 vs MHD - ots tunes
2014 335i N55 EWG
I'm sure many ppl have wondered which will produce more power before they purchase one or the other. So.. anyone have direct comparisons? MHD Stage 2+ E20 vs BM3 Stage 2 E30 Has anyone tried the BM3 stage 2 Race Fuel map? |

Well my answer might not apply to you 100% but I have tried both the stage 2+ (MHD) and stage 2 (BM3) on my car and I felt that the BM3 was a decent amount more powerful. Keep in mind this is for a 2013 PWG on 91oct, im not sure if it would be the same thing for the ethanol maps or not

Do you have logs of both in relatively the same atmospheric conditions (ambient temp and elevation)? You can get a good idea of which one is making more power based on boost and ignition timing.

The pulls are starting from and mostly using different gears, the airflow peak is higher on one where the boost is higher on the other, and one has up to 7.5 degrees difference between cylinders with significant, almost continuous differences between cylinders. You may get higher average timing between cylinders and intermittently higher performance if you rest heavily on knock correction like this. Or you may just be pushing a bit too hard for the octane, especially if you are not actually logging ignition correction. The factory tunes sometimes pull a lot of timing on low octane, but at lower boost.
You also have to think about how hard the vehicle is used, I would not put a vehicle pulling 7.5 degrees more on one cylinder than another into hard use on a circuit where I could not see ignition correction per cylinder and where the requested and actual load are so far apart that the boost would not be reduced in the event of knock getting heavier. More timing and boost on single pulls are not always better. |

Met up with a new friend who happens to have the same color and model Long Beach Blue X4 M40i and has same downpipes as me except MHD Stage2+ had less than 1/4 tank of gas. My advantage was FMIC, with BM3 OTS Stg2 but full tank of gas.
No matter what gear we started in, what speed, I will pull away after 90-100mph. First half of the runs he was in Comfort but shifter to the left (M/S) for power i was in Sport (Not sport+) he was about 2-3 cars behind (even gave him 1-2 cars lead in this mode). Then other half we were both in Sport+ and although he kept up better in mid-range before end of run 125mph (our fastest) he was 1 car behind. I was not sure what to expect but glad we were able to test out and compare, because my STG2 93oct OTS runs 15.7psi target of boost and if I had come with E30 OTS map 17.2psi target the race would end much quicker I'm a happy BM3 camper!

But i'd say your FMIC helped and would still come down to drivers experience and ability to shift around redline. Im sure if i raced someone who is not as aggressive or timid to push there car upwards of 100mph results will vary!

Completey agree but like he mentioned he had to explain to his friend how to use sport+ mode so not everyone is clever enough to figure it out. Not to mention if you've never had a rwd car and feel the back end slide out you might get off the throttle.

Yea according to BMW they made the X4 M40i EWG N55 while all the other X3 35i and X4 35i are PWG lol.
According to BMW the X3 is a Sport Activity Vehicle, the X5 is SUV. The X4 is Sport Activity Coupe and the X6 is Sport Utility Coupe lol if you want to be technical. And yes X4 M40i in stock outperforms the 335 with MPPK in all categories. The new X3 M40i with B58 now has been favored and .1 faster than M550 around a certain track I recently read on 6speedonline

17 and 15.7psi where? who cares about 17psi at 4000rpm as it’s not used in drag race. stock intercooler can survive single 4th gear pull thats it. after you’ll shift to 5th you have 30-40hp less already. about mhd vs bootmod vs any other tuner - it’s not a rocket science to max out turbo and support it with adequate timing. lets say mhd doesn’t know something, so ok mhd can buy bm3 licence flash ecu and then read it in bootmode to see what is done. so topics “mhd(bm3) is shit, bm3(mhd) is cool” are worthless.

i'm cool with MHD.. cheaper and a good tune. Might not be the highest producing WHP but i'm not also looking to squeeze every little bit of WHP out of my car.
