Different gear lever, paddles, faster shifts - worth the price for the paddles alone

You can code SAT if you like and save some cash. Then if you want the paddles later you can retrofit. But it will be quite expensive. So if you want paddles then I would go with the option.

SAT also gives you launch control afaik. With Sport+. Which you can also code

well if you don't want paddles then I would personally save the $500, and code SAT and Sport+ and Launch Control from what I've read here on the forums, and then put that cash towards the MPerf stuff :$

If you don't want paddles, then don't get SAT.

If in the future you want the sport+ feature, just get it coded in. Coding that feature plus a whole bunch of other random stuff that you might like will only run you around 100$.

Save the money and put it towards other things.

Yeah, I came in here thinking, "I thought I responded to this?"

I'm pretty sure I've answered this question at least 3 or 4 times now.

I would start there. You can either code it yourself or ask people in your area if someone will do it for you. Also, check the Regional Forums and craigslist.

I am sure you have answered it at least 5-10 times. The same questions continue to be regurgitated weekly/monthly. The inevitable, "what are the differences between the sport suspension and standard suspension," will be posted shortly.

This is like one of my most highly recommended options after having the car for like 8 months. If you have to get auto, really don't plan on pushing the car at all, and will do 0 fun driving then ok it doesn't matter. If you do however like to push it out there, then having the paddles is 100% better than shifting with the stick. Also I think it makes the wheel look infinitely better. Really fills it out and completes the look IMO.

Never drove a non sport model, but the shifting is incredibly fast. Sport+ is awesome too. I think it's easily worth dropping the $500 rather than having to deal with coding to only get the shift points.

You get people here saying they can tell the difference and others like me that cannot tell any difference at all in shift speed.

I have yet to see any information from BMW that SAT give you faster shift speeds.

If it's any consolation, the SAT 8ZF in my F30 is much quicker than the 8ZF in my folks' Q5. Not sure if it's the same transmission unit/model though.

I've seen that suspension one like crazy too. I also often see:
  • "How do I Launch Control? It's broken."
  • "Is this a good deal from my dealer?"
  • "What removes speed limiter? How do I start car in Sport mode?"
  • "(insert problem here), is this normal? what should I do? how do I fix, even though it's under warranty? "
  • "(insert rude parking situation), with the reason 'it's because I drive a BMW.'"
  • And of course the: "I drive 335i and got loaner 320i. #FML #gladiboughta335i"

It's been claimed that with the SAT, the transmission can shift as fast as a doppelkupplungsgetriebe, which is German for double-clutch transmission. So approximately 0.2 seconds.

You get both the paddle shifters and the software for 500. If launch control is included then why not just pay for it, $500 is nothing considering if you are leasing it you are only paying for about 50% of that over 30+ months (under $10/month)

Is that worth the risk of losing your warranty because you decided to do the coding yourself?

The catch is that SAT requires Sport Line when you're building it. So if anyone is getting a 328 base, then SAT is more like $3000 ($500 for SAT + $2500 for Sport Line).

If the OP wants Sport Line, SAT is a no-brainer. If OP doesnt care for the goodies in Sport Line, nor the paddles, then coding SAT is a better option.

Ahhhhhh, in that case then I have to agree, SAT is not worth $3,000. Thanks for the clarification.

What's up with the name capt slow? That name is only suitable for someone who drives an IS250

It's $500 on a $50K+ car.

But you're doing MPPK and MPE? Load that car up!!!

I've had a tough day.

No regrets not getting paddles here. Just let the car change gears for you. 8 is too many anyway

Function wise, as others have noted, you get the paddle shifters and a different gear lever that also gets a leather wrapped boot.
The "sport" trans function has been discussed in many threads, do a search to read about that.
Short version is that the programming may allow a slightly quicker response to manual gear selection, and quicker response and shifts both up and down.
But, I haven't found any definitive testing to validate BMW and ZF's claim.

In terms of value, if you're leasing then you won't pay the full $500 as you'll only pay for the depreciation of that option during the lease terms.
If you're cash purchasing or loan purchasing, then consider a potential future buyer may want that feature and it may sell easier.
Plus, you'll get a tiny bit more on resale even if only $100 or $200, where the option still won't cost you the full $500.

For a sport or Msport 3 series I would get the option as it lends itself better to a sport series 3.
For me I like how the paddles looks and function, and I like the look of the sport shift lever and the nicer leather boot.
