Standard Electronic Power Steering vs Variable Ratio Mechanical Steering

So I know that the Base Steering is an Electronic Power steering system but the optional Steering is a Variable Ratio Steering that BMW states it is purley Mechanical system based on a variable ratio steering rack.

Does this mean the optinal Variable Ratio Steering is Hydraulic or is it also Electronic?

Does anyone know the correct answer for this?

Thanks

The whole 65 page press release talks over and over again about the new electric steering system, and how it saves fuel. When they mention the optional variable sports steering, they don't say it's hydraulic. They also say in the catalogue that the electric steering saves up to 3% in fuel. Given that there is no separate MPG figures for cars with the optional variable sports steering, I would conclude hydraulic steering is not available.

Also, I just don't believe they'd develop two completely different steering systems for the same car.

True, I agree!! Isn't it the same system that the new F25 X3 uses?

My guess also is that it is the same system used in the X3. Having come from an E90 into the X3 it is a different feel, but not as bad as you may think. Also, some of that difference is due to the higher center of gravity in the X3, etc. You'd have to test drive it to really get an idea.
