Saw that BMS came out with the oil catch can for the N20. To me it looks like the old oil catch can for the n54 but it also fit for the n20.

I know its new for our cars but was wondering if it was really necessary?
Save the $200 and put it into something else?

well I have it for almost two weeks and It caught some oil.. it is very useful if you are running a tune, If you are stock then it will help but not as much as with tune

Catch cans are always good for engines with higher than normal cylinder pressure. The more you increase cylinder pressure (i.e. adding a tune and raising the boost) the more "blow by" you will get into the crankcase, thus increasing the amount of oil vapor going back into the intake track. Adding a catch can will help keep the intake/manifold/intercooler, turbo compressor/etc cleaner over time. Pretty much the only reason engines don't have open venting of the crankcase is for emissions purposes.

Was it hard to install? Looks easy but always worried about tubes? Anything leaked while removing tubes?

No at all except for the tube fitting after I mounted the bms and cut the tubes you have to force a little and so far there are no leaks.

I keep thinking this should be renamed to an OCD can, I can't believe people worry about/ spend money on this for stock or even moderately tuned cars.

After seeing E90 335s with severe carbon buildup, I can understand the question of whether this is a good idea. If I keep my car for several years I'd love to avoid thinking about walnut blasting or other means of cleaning the intake ports and valves.

Bumping this thread just to see if anyone has a catch can and would like to comment on what it has collected from their motor.

Since it's so easy to get to the connector on the front of the valve cover, I popped it off out of curiosity and snapped a photo:



It's hard to tell against a black hose, but it doesn't look too bad.

There is, however, a tiny bit of oil there on the edge.

I'm not sure if that translates to "I should put in a catch can" but maybe others can check out their PCV hose and report back what they find.

Not sure if its related but i did the "proper" way of breaking in. I.e. the driving it like you stole it to properly seat the rings. Comparatively my engine makes better gas mileage and power than a friends car
This may explain why my occ is dry as well

Mine is pretty dry as well after almost 10 months on it.

Probably the climate makes a difference. There are ppl who lives in colder climate who has gotten a full can in less than a week.

Ditto on the proper break-in. My oil is still at max after 7k miles, I'm just contemplating JB4 and wondering if the occ is a good preventive measure. Sounds like everyone who has it hasn't seen much accumulation.

I wanted to bump this to get an up to date status of what people are currently seeing. I'm contemplating on getting one since I am getting the ER IC but am hesitant because of what I see here.

This is from a german forum, this is what it looks like after a few days and/or longer drives. Says during the summer its dry inside but as soon as it gets a bit colder it starts catching.. One of the guys is running pretty heavily modded (tune, FMIC, intake etc..) and the other one is stock.

WOW That seems really severe for just a couple days of driving. I would have to say if they are having that much accumulation there is something else wrong but idk

Cold and/or humid weather would be the culprit, if you idle a lot you´ll contribute to it as well.. their engines are healthy and doing great

Still dry? Do you live somewhere that has a winter? If so have colder temps made any difference to how much you catch?
