Headlights off while engine off

Hey guys,I've already been through the manual, but how do u turn off the headlights when engine is off? I turned the knob to the middle with the"0" and it does turn off the lights but after a while the idrive turns off as well. Is there any way to have all lights off and just still listen to the radio? Thanks for the help

I believe, that if you open the door, everything should turn off, even the lights, unless you have the follow me home option on.

But I don't want to turn everything off, for instance I get to work early and I'm just sitting in the car listening to the radio, how do I turn off all the lights (interior and exterior) but keep the radio on. I've been able to do it by turning the light knob to the middle "0" but in like 5-10 minutes the radio turns off even when I'm using it.

For the radio to turn off after like 5 minutes is normal. Did that in my e90 and does it in my f30 as well.

I dont believe there is a way to keep everything off but radio on, all the way until you get out of the car and press the lock button.

Why can't you just press the radio "on" button to turn it back on after it's automatically turned off? The ignition doesn't have to be on for that.

Turn off day-time running lamps in the settings. Then 0 on the knob will turn off headlights.

Do have xenon or halogens? I leave mine on auto. I have xenons and when I hit stop, headlights turn off, radio still on, but daytime running lights stay on, aka halos, aka angel eyes. Once I open door, radio still on, but halos turn off.

Just hit the start button again without stepping on the brakes.

I have xenons, yea I noticed that the daytime lights stay on, but I want all of it off, I'll try opening the door and the closing it to see if the radio stays on instead of closing in 5 min. And I do press the start button without the breaks and it does work but then it opens up all the lights again lol

Thanks tonyS, just press the actual radio volume button when everything turns off, smh I feel dumb lol.But dont press the radio button where all the other buttons are at on the drivers right hand side cuz that won't turn the radio on. Now hopefully it doesn't turn off every 10 minutes.

Yep. It says so in the manual. Like the OP, I want to be able to kick it in the car and listen to the radio. But I cant unless I want to turn the car back on every 8 minutes. It's literally the only thing I don't like about my car.

I've been trying to find out if this is an issue that can be fixed with coding....
Anybody know?

Until you get a flat battery from using electrical appliances for too long without charging the battery.

That would take hours upon hours. BMW could safely let us have a lot more than 8 minutes of accessory power. Anyway, it's just a tiny annoyance in an otherwise brilliant car.

No problem. Leave your car running. Then hit the voice control button and say "lighting."
Then, uncheck "daytime running lamps."
This will turn off your lights front and rear while engine remains on.
If it is cloudy or dark then you will need to move the headlamp switch to off too.
Don't forget to turn the DRLs back on since they save lives.

If you don't want the engine on and you want to bleed the battery dry without 8 minute cutoff, after you shut engine, turn on the ignition. Press start twice without putting foot on brake.

I agree it can be quite annoying having just 8 mins, but that's what they did (not sure the exact time limit) with the E90 as well.

Don't be too sure about hours and hours if you want your car to start. Remember, just because a battery operated appliance shuts off due to 'low battery' charge, doesn't mean the battery has very little power left. A 12 volt appliance may shut off with the battery @ 10 volts.

Car batteries have to provide lots of amps of current when starting the car, so it pretty much needs to be charged up at all times. Also, don't forget that having accessories on in a car like the F30 means a number of battery draining components are on at the same time. Some of those units are not seen and as such, out of mind. It really doesn't take very much to use up vital battery power.

Eh...that does suck. Oh well I'll just press that radio button every 8 then, as long as the lights don't stay on.

No no no. What the others are telling you is wrong. The 8 minutes before auto-off is for the *ignition* - i.e. when you press the engine start button to turn everything on, it will turn it all back off again after a few minutes if you haven't actually started the engine.

I'm talking about turning just the radio back on by pressing the volume knob on the radio - don't touch anything else. It stays on for much longer than 8 minutes. It also doesn't turn on anything else such as the lights/DRLs. If it's like my old E46 there is a timeout of something like one hour after which it turns off, but to my mind that's sensible in case you accidentally leave it on.

I know this to be true because I've just been out to the car and tried it, and the radio was still on well after 30 minutes. Give it a try.

Just for the benefit of anyone in the UK/Europe, the DRLs are always on and you can't turn them off - the option isn't present. EU regulations on all new cars apparently.
