Excellent point. In the history of car ownership, I don't believe anyone has ever kept their car longer than 4 years, or driven it more than 50,000 miles.

I am not so sure. I have changed my oil/filter myself a number of times. I used to put in 7 quarts, but was a little afraid of an overfill, so would put in about 6.5 qts. After warmup, my computer always said "full". Well, today I put in six quarts just to see what the computer would say - FULL! So 6, 6.5 and 7 qts all read "full".
Give me a dipstick. I truly wonder how many overfills have taken place because of inaccurate computer measurements.

I wonder how many sensors have failed? I wonder how many people can actually sense if a car has run flats or not? I wonder if it would bother the other 99% of owners who couldn't tell a dipstick from a live one if they couldn't fit two carry on bags in the trunk? I wonder why I just read all the posts in this thread if I am happy with my run flats and fine with checking the oil while driving?

Don't care about spare, I actually find that storage space quite usefull

Now about the dipstick. I they improve the current computer version then I am OK, otherwise bring the dipstick back. Because it is like this, you check you oil with the computer, it would say OK, OK, OK, OK, OK, next time it would go: BAM ADD 1L NOW. WTF? I swear last time it was OK

So they need to place maybe more sensors or whatever, because you would be driving with like 99% lack of quart of oil until it reaches 1 quart, so computer would finally recognize that you need to top off.

This type of comment is exactly why BMW enthusiasts feel abandoned by the company. Maintenance? Oil Level? Huh? Say what? The simplicity of the dipstick is gone. We now cater to those only worried about having the roundel on their hood, and coddled by computers and sensors "checking" capacities and mechanical functions, whether right or wrong (oh, did I overfill the crankcase - it said full??). Sometimes simpler is better, but we will probably never get it back.

My favorite part about that add is that last few seconds when you see him running around the background!

I keep my cars around 8-10 years... can't afford to go buying a new one every few years...

I want BMW to concentrate on lowering 3ers weight.

Next time you get the chance, go lift up a rft. I guarantee you one spare weighs less than the net weight gain of 4 rft's.

No dipstick in them either. And the electonic oil reading is 100x better in the BMW. Both of our Porsches can take to take 9 minutes to get a read....AND you can't get a reading while you're driving!

I'm going out on a limb and guessing a sensor for fluid level costs more than 18" of steel tubing, some wire and plastic.

The only technical reason I heard that even halfway seemed reasonable was something about BMW wanting to pressurize the crankcase and worrying about the dipstick blowing out. Of course it would seem easier to me to make a threaded dipstick than to invent a fancy oil level sensor.

I think basically it comes down to BMW believing most BMW drivers don't want to be bothered opening the hood of their ultimate driving machine for any reason.

These are the same people that designed two cupholders that slide into the dashboard rather than just put two holes in the center console...
