You're still better off putting it in gear. The engine braking will lessen the wear on your brakes, and you'll use less fuel. When the car is in gear and you take your foot off the gas for more than a second or two, the fuel injectors will shut off completely. There's no need for the engine to use any fuel, since the car is keeping the rpm up.
