Oil for 500hp N55

Hi guys

During my last oil change ~1000miles ago I just had the standard 5w30 (I believe it is) changed at the BMW dealer. I am now pushing close to 500hp and thinking of replacing my fresh oil with e.g. 10w60. I know it would not harm but would it be overkill? What are you Stg2 turbo guys running?

I used to use liqui moly 5-30
Now I have bmw 5-30
I felt that my engine was smoother and easier to spin when i had LM5w-30 im def going back to it or try LM5w-40 next time

I would run a 40 weight or higher on that amount of power. 30 weight is too thin and in most cases has been found to sheer down to 20 weight by 3K miles of use. Also the thicker the oil the more protection you will have but all the components that feed the oil will work harder to push the weight and also you will have a slight fraction of power loss. Nothing you will notice though. Bellow are some of the main oils people have used and are using on High HP builds in BMW application and many others as well. You can also get a lot of info on https://bobistheoilguy.com/

Amsoil
Liqui moly
Rotella
Penzoil
Valvoline

My dealer uses Liqui moly 5w-30 for all of our oil changes. it's like 10$/Liter over here.
I used BMW 5w-30 Oil last time, and it felt that the engine got heavier after the oil change.

I have decided to go with some Motul 300V Chrono 10w-40. The price is astronomical here in China (72usd/2liter) but it is the only class 5 oil I can find. Might be total overkill - but running +20psi its better to be safe

$70 for two litres? this is good oil, but that price is ridiculous. i would look elsewhere.

My dealer used to use 0W40 but have recently swapped to 5W30. The car is FBO now, running ~17 psi. Should I revert back to 0W40?

I totally agree! But nowhere else to look. Cannot import stuff like this because it is "spare parts" and you'd need a special permit for that.

Anyhow, devided over 5000km its not so bad....just the feeling of knowing you pay way too much

definitely not, 5w30 is better protection. you live in a hot climate, if you drive aggressively, 5w40 would be even better for you.

As I've previously noted in another thread, 6IX doesn't know what all those numbers mean. The 5W-40 is thicker at operating temp and offers more protection. Even the 0W-40 is better than the 5W-30 (at operating temperature.)

I corrected/added to my post. The 0W-40 oil provides more protection than 5W-30 (at operating temp.) Sorry for the confusion, but the 0W and 5W doesn't really matter. In fact, the lower numbers provide *MORE* protection during startups than, say a 10W oil, because the pump more easily and coat the engine parts sooner.

10w must be pretty bad for cold starts, unless you bearing clearances allow for such a weight.

0w is for temperatures -20c or lower. if you live in a climate that rarely/almost never sees temperatures this low, why would you even consider to use such a weight?

i am still convinced that 5w oil provides better protection at full operating temperature then 0w because it is a thicker oil. my engine runs quieter and smoother with a 5w vs 0 at operating temp.

I'm in the process of going FBO. Have been running JB+ for a year now on BMW 5w30. I just went to the dealer yesterday to pick up 7 qts as it's time for an oil change (I change at 5k miles between dealer service changes) and the gentleman at the parts counter told me that BMW now only offers 0w30 and they made that change on Jan 1. Said it was because BMW is working towards better efficiency/mileage standards. He also told me his newer 2016 535 w/JB4 is drinking about a quart of it every 7k miles but he's not going to switch because he wants to maintain his warranty.

Based on all of this, I am very hesitant to go to the 0w30 and am considering going to the Castrol 0w40 that I use in my E39 or looking for BMW 5w30 on Amazon. And, now I wonder if I should drain and replace the dealer fill immediately after I take it in for scheduled service. I wish BMW had left it well alone!!!

I'm using Castrol Edge 0w-40 and have not burned any oil between my 5,000 - 7,500 mile intervals.

0w30 because less VII's are generally required vs a 0w40.

I live in NW PA (Erie) and only drive the car April through late October/early November. The hottest it usually gets around here is mid 80's F. And, because I do not drive the car in the winter or below 40 F, the 0W aspect isn't overly crucial to me from a cold startup standpoint.

Somewhere I had heard or read that Shell makes Pennzoil's Pure Plus synthetic in addition to the BMW branded oil. If that's the case, then maybe I switch over to Pennzoil's Euro 5w30 and essentially get the same "BMW" oil they previously offered. I also think it costs less. Does this make sense?
