Be careful what you wish for.....
I've recently noticed just how pocked my window screen is with small chips and a few scratches in drivers field of view (I commute 400 miles a week). More noticeable with a few sunny days featuring now. Just the day before this happened thought "a cracked screen would be handy to get a reset on this problem" and hey presto, noticed this the morning after a night commute home!
So I get a nice new shiny clear screen.....and apparently a massive extra bill, according to my BMW insurance recommended repairer Autoglass, to calibrate my high beam assist/speed warning camera. The usual £75.00 insurance excess + an additional £330.00 for the camera related aspect/calibration?? Did a quick search for previous threads but couldn't see any recent comment.....anyone else had this done through autoglass lately? |

If the excess is £75 for windscreen, i would be arguing with Autoglass or BMW that the extra charge should be footed within the insurance claim...surely that's what the insurance is for?!

My latest one cracked last week as well, I'm ignoring it at the moment but needs to be done.
I once had a replacement screen go the same week it was fitted.

Apologies yes windscreen....I blame my teething 9 month old for sleep disturbed brain disconnect! Spoke to BMW insurance and it is covered so just standard £75.00 excess. Can't imagine it's only BMW insurance who cover this but maybe others don't, hence misinformation from autoglass agent?
Took a special booking with autoglass for one of their mobile team who has the kit for the calibration, so I get to keep this crack until Thursday next week. |

No, but I'm still not convinced regarding the calibration thing, nothing has ever stopped working after replacement, speed display/HUD/adaptive lights etc...
So I'm not sure what actually needs calibrating, they just need to fit thicker glass!

LVE don't cover it. I had the Same with my Skoda VRS I was trading before I got the F31. £300 odd for a calibration on top of the £75 glass swap as it had lane assist installed.
I declined saying Id get it done by the dealer and when I spoke to the guy who did the glass swap he said 99% of the time they didn't need it as the replacement unit had the camera installed on the screen which was already calibrated enough. Sure enough mine was fine and didn't throw any errors when connected.

Had mine replaced in January this year by National Windscreens (I politely declined to have Autoglass do it). They (NW) were waiting for the calibration kit to come in to the depot and asked me to pop back 2 weeks later to have it done.
Everything works on the car (HUD, Rain sensor, HBA, SLD, ACC, Automatic Braking) so I never bothered. I did have a genuine screen fitted though so I wonder if there is any difference between OEM and non standard that the latter requires calibration due to different tolerances/manufacturing processes? .

Just had mine done today by Autoglass. Original OEM and there was no discussion of re-calibration.
I have HBA but no speed limit display.

According to a glasstech guy who did my rear window its a nice little earner. Fact is all the assist system self calibrate on BMW, one of those myths. I cant see that it woudl go backwards for F30 and require calibration
Just ensure you press for official BMW glass and not cheap aftermarket one. The main thing I recall when I had mine done on E90 and that had adaptive high beam was ensuring the steam/fog sensor was correctly re attached to the glass to ensure that works fine. Got to love insurers, tell them you need official glass to keep warranty and no calibration
