Diy: F30 taillights fix
Hey guys,
If any of you are dealing with problems with your taillights/brake/turn signal, here is a quick and easy solution for it. I recently started having issues with my Driver brake and turn signal (taillight) and this fixed the issue. Please see link below and find the member that did it on his f30, I believe is post #334. https://forum.e46fanatics.com/showpo...512469?page=34 |

There is a repair kit on the f30 for this issue. Just had it done on mine a couple of months ago. The ground wire burns through the connector pin due to over voltage.

Yeap, that’s exactly what happened to mine but this resolved the issue for a bit less then $10. Great DIY. You can buy a new plug connector and new plug but eventually it will happen again. Not sure if that is what you did to yours.

There is no over-voltage. The problem is that one ground pin is inadequate to handle the current draw of both bulbs. The engineering justification for the undersized ground pins was probably that it would be rare for both bulbs to be on at the same time long enough to cause overheating of the connection, but as usual Murphy's Law reigns supreme. The linked fix works by increasing the current capacity of the ground connection. An alternate fix is to switch to LEDs, as they draw maybe 1/10 the current that the stock bulbs do. If you just replace the connector chances are it will burn out again, since you fixed the symptom but not the underlying cause.
