That doesn't work so well on my BMW, and I've had to re-learn clutch-work with the whole leg/knee, which gave better control over a fairly long throw. That might be a factor for the OP to consider.

1. Manual is not consistent. Sometimes it is silk smooth and I feel I master the skill, then sometimes I just never can get it right.

2. If you want smooth, try let RPM drop before you release the clutch, or shift before 2500 RPM. I notice on my 320 from 1-2 and 2-3 I have to let the RPM drop a lot to get a smooth shift, because I tend to rev the engine to above 3000 RPM to pick up the speed. All the other gears I don't wait that long because I tend to shift at 2500 or below.

3. If you have AC on, no need to wait for RPM to drop, shift and let clutch go quicker

4. Downshifting I just tap the gas to rev up the RPM before I release the clutch. I find if I rev the engine above 1500 RPM downshifting 1 gear is no problem, if you downshift more than 1 gear you need to rev the engine higher

5. Practice
This thread is five years old, I think OP has the hang of it by now.
