Rolling between Gears ?

Hey everyone,

I've noticed my car has been rolling between gears. It's an automatic and I haven't experienced this with any other BMW (or any car with an electronic automatic transmission or regular automatic transmission) that I've driven. It did once or twice in the past few months but today I noticed significant (as if the car was in neutral) rolling forward until I pressed the gas while in reverse and or rolling backward until I pressed the gas while in drive. I don't particularly mind, my only concern is that this may be mechanical problem that can evolve from simply rolling. I always stop completely before changing gears but someone leased the car for 3 years prior to me purchasing it so heaven only knows what it's been through in it's original 40k miles. Should I be worried? Is this sign of a part going bad? I'm still under manufacturer's warranty until 50k miles or 11/2018 for most parts, I think certain components have the extended warranty due to defects, I'm still debating whether to renew the warranty and service pack.

Thanks for reading.

I'd roll right into the dealer and let them check it out.

^^ This guy is on a roll here but might not be your best "roll" model

I would definitely take it into the dealer and have it checked. Personal recommendation: get a BMW warranty since you purchased it. (especially with 40k "unknown miles" meaning hard miles?)

Definitely take it in to Dealer and get it checked. I had wrote a post about skipping the extended warranty if you can afford to eat a catastrophic failure as in most cases you wind up money ahead. Then I remembered you've purchased a leased vehicle, get the warranty. Well worth it for the peace of mind if nothing else in my opinion. Good luck!

If mine rolls backwards whilst in drive, it will put the gearbox into park, and vice-versa in reverse, it also holds the break on for 2 seconds if the car is on a hill. I suspect potentially the hill control thing is not working correctly.

I don't believe this is an ECO PRO thing:

ECO PRO Mode:

The ECO PRO Mode helps drivers reduce their fuel consumption by up to 20 percent, depending on their driving style – according to an internal BMW fuel consumption study. The coasting function (only with 8-speed Steptronic transmission) and ECO PRO Route (only with Navigation system Plus) offer an increased savings potential.

The coasting function decouples the drive train from the engine and the vehicle rolls without the transmission. The car "coasts" when the driver takes the foot from the gas between 50 and 160 km/h and does not apply the brakes. In combination with Active Cruise Control, the vehicle also accelerates back to the desired speed more efficiently after braking when in ECO PRO Mode.

The ECO PRO Route shows the most efficient route based on the traffic situation, driving style and road conditions. The on-board computer shows the percentage of fuel that can be saved by taking the ECO PRO Route.
