Congrats Bonanza! Not sure you ever revealed your final spec. It would be great to hear which options you finally went for...

Whether you buy at 20 or 80, this car will suit every driver perfectly. That's why the 3-series is so awesome.

Salary and 3 series ownership isn't going to be the same across the US.
Modest houses in California can go over $500K. In my area similar houses sell for $250K. So, it makes a BIG difference in what car one can afford based on the market one lives in.
$140K in one part of the US may only give you 2/3 the buying power of big items in other parts of the country.

Yet, a 3 costs the same all across the US.

I wonder if $140k is household income. I'm single and jobs where I live generally don't pay that much at my age (35) unless you're a doctor, lawyer or just lucky. But, that's one of the reasons they make leases.

I am 99.999% sure that it is household income... It's $140K for the 3 series and up to $250K for the 7 series. Average for BMW as a whole is $160K household income but as I've said for the 3 series it's $140K. IMHO, you should not pay more than 15% of you monthly salary after taxes on a car payment.

Since I put 50% down does that count? Between my roommate and I our household income is close to the 140k but by myself I'm not close to 140k but cost of living in fl is a lot less than most states u know since jackets and coats not required.

I am sure you will be OK if you put 50% of the price of the car down LOL. That's just not an option for many people so the rule that I put down is what should typically be followed. It's all relative though to the persons situation...

This ^

The avg home price where I'm from is in the $150k range (and that may be high)... One of the most affordable cities to live in, so if you make a good salary at a young age without wife/kids, you are more apt to be able to afford a new 3 series.

Doesn't hurt that I saved up enough to put almost half of the car down.

lol I wish I could say that about the houses here.. average price is $550,000 here and the average Joe really doesn't make enough in this state to be able to pay for that. Not to mention the normal cost of living over here... this state is really one where income does not equal the costs of living for many.
