Does BMW Apps display SMS or email messages from the iPhone?

I have done some Googling, and there is speculation that IF YOU GET THE NAV (regardless of BMW Assist) then your iPod should work with the Apple USB white cable and you do not need the BMW Y-Cable. If you DO NOT GET NAV then the Y-cable is required. Can anyone confirm this?

To clarify:

1.) You have an F30 with NAV
2.) You DO NOT have BMW Assist and/or BMW Apps or enhanced Blue Tooth & USB

Does your iPod integrate with iDrive with the standard Apple cable, or do you have to use the BMW Y-cable?
I have an F30 with NAV. I do NOT have BMW Assist or BMW Apps or enhanced Blue Tooth & USB. My iPod does NOT integrate with the standard Apple cable. I have to use the y-cable.

The white cable vs y-cable is not contingent on the NAV. It is contingent on Assist+Enhanced Bluetooth. You do not need Apps to use the standard Apple cable. Just Nav+Assist+Enhanced Bluetooth.

Hopefully, that puts a nail in the coffin.

One more question: Did your car come with a Y-cable? I've seen posts from several people on here saying a Y-cable came sealed with their manuals in the glovebox when they took delivery. Was that the case for you?

I was the one that said mine came with a y-cable. If your's does not, have the dealer throw it in.

Using Google Maps in the BMW Remote App to look up destinations and send to your GPS is a godsend. Especially in LA where you have no idea if the city is Los Angeles, Culver City, Hollywood, etc which will take forever to figure out in the GPS system.

...you know you are allowed to use your iPhone IN your car, right? Just look it up there and then plug it into the GPS like normal. That's not much of an incentive for me.

thanks for the smart ass comment. i had no idea i could read an address and then enter it in to the gps manually. didn't realize there was a connection between eyes and fingers.

it's convenience. i can get an address sent to my gps in a few seconds while driving vs using one hand to hold the phone and the other hand to fumble around with the wheel. apparently you don't have this feature.

Alright, fair enough, I made a jackass comment. I personally don't see the big advantage in that feature, but if you like it that's your prerogative. My apologies for kind of being an asshole about it.

entering an address into iDrive sucks. It's tedious, and half the time it can't even find the address I want. Sending it from the phone is SO much easier and faster.

without the adapter (the WORST part of it is the "search" and browsing to actually play the song(s) you wish to play. It's tedious. I could program a space shuttle with less clicks)

You still get album art without the adapter? Or is that because you have enhanced USB?

Bummer. I really wish BMW explained exactly what the enhanced USB got you better. I assumed it was just related to the Apps, which I didn't care about. (Twitter, FB, Pandora, etc.) If I had known it made just playing my own music a better experience I would have sprung for it.
