AWD is enabling acceleration in a straight line. AWD does not help at all with traction, cornering or stopping. You are at the mercy of summer tires.

I will admit stopping was an issue but I was not traveling at high speeds.
Exactly. To stop properly you need weather appropriate tires.
Thanks for the mature discussion without the name calling and acknowledging that I already said the car does not stop well

Maybe more should, but claims that the 60% of the people without them are idiots, a danger to the public, and should stay off the roads sounds puerile, as BMW drivers are often characterized as being. Driving within the limits of the car and road can accommodate most conditions.
Thank you for stating that what is important is to drive within the limits of the car. I think my posts state this. The idea is to just know your limits. I worry for those range river drivers I stated previously

You have no concept of winter driving whatsoever. A car with all season takes 30 ft longer to stop than same car on winters. On summers you are a liability on the road. Troll.
And now for this name caller dude is everything ok on your end. See the more mature guys who can point out their differences without the childish behavior.

The discussion was about driving in the snow and how awd enables a person like myself to drive at the corollas pace so as to get me from point a through b. if you have winters and want to do more that 45 mph in the snow be my guest. I am more than happy with my staggered 19s riding at speeds akin to the 1997 corollas. If you just drive within the cars limits you will find you will do fine with the summers.

By law, you need winter tires in Quebec. Not in ontario. I am not sure of other provinces.

Thanks, there was a post about how most Canadians are not using winter tires, are you seeing a lot of fwd cars having lots of accidents there? I am being sarcastic because drama queens here were we receive snow much less than there make bold statements about how people die when they don't have appropriate tires. If there are authorities on the subject of winter, snow or summer tires, it will have to be the Canadians

Don't worry man, I'm on my Summer Continental ContisportContact SSRs right now. Everyone here is so eager to scream were liabilities, dangers, blah blah blahity blah. The same people don't think twice about doing 100 on a highway. I'm pretty sure my stopping distance going 60 in an inch of snow on summer tires is less than yours at 100 in winters on dry road.

According to these people 10 years ago no car should have been on the road during snow, since back then there was no such thing as winter tires as they are defined today.

Hell, I took my 1990 Nissan Sentra POS through a snowstorm fine. I think my 2013 BMW can handle it. Yes, winter tires are better. But that's like saying "OMG THE FRONT OF YOUR CAR ISN'T MADE OF PLAYDOH? YOU'RE A HAZARD!"

Lol, you did warn me though. I applauded those guys here who differed but offered sane arguments for their positions. We have received snow over several days and I have driven in my summers just fine. Thankfully I have not yet died nor have I committed mass genocide on our roads due to my poor choice of tires

Actually, there were. Blizzaks, for example, have been around for twenty years.

Fortunately, most that don't purchase winter tires are on all-seasons; tires are simply not of interest to them.

My current summer tires have more snow grip than my all seasons from 15 years ago.

With my E90's I drove the summer performace tires in an inch of snow or less. Otherwise, just left it in the garage. I couldn't get past my driveway in more snow than that. Lately I found that I've gotta be on snowy roads more than I'd like to be so threw on the Blizzack tire/wheel package from Tire Rack. No sense risking injury or damage when it can all be prevented with $1200 worth of snow tires on all 4 corners.

X-drive is great, but you still need all seasons, at minimum.

True, but bear in mind we are talking about NJ snow, it's only been like 1 to 3 inches per snow storm. The G 37 may start to outperform with more snow. The stopping distances are also bad with the summers so I have to drive at low speeds to stay safe. It's an interesting discussion though, I wonder what other people's experiences have been while driving at reasonable speeds.

Uh, huh. Right.

We have already established your grip on tire history is, at best, tenuous. Run summer tires in the snow if you want - I am not part of the lecturing crowd - but do not attempt to justify it with specious historical "facts."

Even if true, do you really want to argue your current decisions are grounded in competing with 15 and 20 year-technology? "15 years ago the bar was much lower and, look at me!, I limped over the old low bar of nearly a generation ago."

I've driven summer tires in snow and it's pretty miserable. On straight, level roads it feels squirrely but doable until one has to stop or turn. I do not want to contemplate an emergency.

I got caught once in my Z06 in a 1/4" of snow a couple of years ago. I could not even begin to get up my driveway where the snow was fresh. Truly high performance summer tires are completely useless in snow.

I can't believe this is such a problem. Winter tires for weather below 7 degrees celsius. Summer for above 7 and all seasons if you barely making those low temps. Summers will survive light snow with careful driving. But if you hit black ice, you are fucked!

Z06, I would be scared to drive that car even with winter tires, those are serious sports cars

Imagine driving a DodgeViper in the snow, that should be fun. Truth be told I am scared of driving that car even in the summer

Everyone can drive how they want in whatever wheels they want. Ultimately, I'm 10 years accident free of any kind, and 15 years free of any accident out side of parking bumps. On my shitty tires and all. Let's see how many can claim that here.

Adjust for miles driven and population density and I'm sure you're in the bell curve like all of us...

Why do we have to get technical, the man has had a good 15 year run, that's all that matters here. At least he is not murdering people right, isn't that what we all want. You just can't win here

Well, population density is Manhattan. Miles driven over the years... 200k? 300k?

Yes, If I was in PA or Vermont or Colorado or wherever, I'd invest in some winter tires. But this is NY. They salt the roads BEFORE it snows. Same in NJ. I was there this morning at 8AM after a night of snow, and guess what? Not a speck of snow on the roads. The only place we'll have to deal with snow is on our own driveways. And no, I'm not gonna spend 2-3k to get up a driveway.

Congrats man, that's a good record. I am in NJ and you are so right, we really do not get that much snow here especially over the last couple of years.
