Anyone got a March 2015 or later built car yet with the new Shell oil cap ?

Anyone receive a car that was built in February/March 2015 yet ?
The engine oil cap should now say "BMW Recommends Shell" instead of the old "BMW recommends Castrol"

If so please post a picture of the new cap.

BMW changed from Castrol oils to Shell GTL oils worldwide from 01 January 2015

It's more than just brand name change. The oil to be used in N20/N26 and all future Bxx engines is 0w-20, LL14 spec.

Are they really changing from 5w-30 to 0w-20? Seems drastic.

Yes. But only for these engines, at least for now.

I do not mean to hijack the thread, but I have not yet found nicer aftermarket gas caps for the F30, i.e. a nice aluminum made cap. I know this is completely useless and that I would be the only one seeing and enjoying it, but it's just part of my OCD nature.
Anyone out there who found something already ?

How do you know the cap will say Shell oils? Top tier Shell oils are marketed in the U.S. under the Pennzoil brand name. I don't think you can find a Shell branded oil in the U.S. that meets BMW LL specs.

Probably related to fuel economy as much as anything else. Many manufacturers are going to 20 weight oil after a zillion years at 30.

Saw the press release. It's the new Shell Helix Ultra made from natural gas.

Thought Castrol Edge was great, but they indeed made the switch. The synthetic supposedly doesn't evaporate as much. We shall see if that's just marketing talk.

I'm sure it's good stuff though since the entire company is moving.

Thats what we will only find out when we see the new caps.
US cap is same as the rest of the world, so guessing it either says Shell or BMW oil. Or maybe nothing ??

Reported the change for the Bxx to LL14 20W oil here some time ago.
Have not seen any tech docs that say any Nxx engines can use it, only Bxx.
Will have to check next time I have access to the list.

No, it's a brand change, Shell made some better offer on supply and cost. Or the daughter of a BMW exec married a Shell exec's son. LOL

Castrol LL14 spec

I am sure Mobil 1 will have an oil out for it soon as well.

Personally won't touch Shell stuff.

Why not? I use their Rotella T6 5w-40 in my E36 M3 motor with good results, and it gets rave support all over from several car communities, as well as bobistheoulguy forums.

I saw the table in a recent either KSD or ISTA, don't remember which one exactly.

+1. BMW could use any one of at least ten suppliers, they'll give their business to whoever gives them the best deal.
