HUD Windshield

Is the HUD windshield more prone to damage from encountering wind debris and the like? I took a trip through the desert in windy conditions and now with the sun shining directly I can see a few pinhole nicks here and there.

Never noticed that on my other BMWs driven the same route over the years.

All BMW windshields are notoriously soft and prone to pitting. I don't believe the glass itself is different for HUD. Just the interior coating.

Ok, I'm really curious.... Are there a lot of pigeons in the UK or something? And how does a chicken end up on a windshield?

I change parking spots if my car gets pooped on once.

Whenever there's a problem why does someone always say BMW is notorious for this or that?

Isn't glass glass? All the same? My 97 m3 that's seen a ton of miles isn't pitted. My old scion Xbox was pitted to shit. I attribute it to the angle of the windshield.

I'm joking about the pigeons but sadly not about the chicken. That actually happened on my way to work today. I was doing about 60 when it flew out of some bushes. It was crossing from my right to left and only made it as far as the passenger side. Happened so fast that there was no time for brakes. I'm lucky it was just a chicken.

Can't help it. I have to drive through some farmland to get to work and that's where i got ambushed. And besides, other than the few drops of pee that i lost(j/k), the car and I are fine, lol.

Because it usually IS? In short, glass is not glass. Some quick Googling of "soft BMW windshield" or "BMW windshield pitting" will probably provide some overwhelming data for you to digest.

There are many variables that will affect everyone's experiences. In my region, there's a ton of crap on the roads that's constantly getting kicked up. Anyone familiar with the PA and NJ turnpikes will be able to relate. I've had over 20 BMWs of all vintages. I replace windshields as a routine maintenance item. None of my other cars (driven on the same roads) have had as many. Hell, I have two pits already on my new car with 1,800 miles on the clock. And I've been very careful to stay far behind other cars and trucks. I don't even know where or when I got them.

My Evo VIII had a HORRIBLY thin windshield = weight savings for a "rally" car, right? Cracked in 2 years, had it replaced with "OEM" like, and never cracked, MUCH thicker...so yeah, BMW is probably like the Mitsu Evo, thin glass for weight savings.

You may be able to clean some of it up by using clay bar on the screen. Will get rid of the grits stuck to the screen and smooth it out. Try it and see what happens.

Cheers
