12v plug under glove box question

Can anyone confirm if the 12v plug under the glovebox has a delayed shut off or remains on 24/7 even with the car turned off? I'm trying to wire a dash cam and need to know if I should hardwire it, or if I can get away with the 12v plug.

I'm not sure, but you could test it. Just plug a phone in and turn the car off, check it 15 minutes later to see if its still charging. The delay shutoff (if it has one) would not be any longer than that.

I have a dash cam plugged into it. It has a delayed shut-off, probably around 10 min or so.

Awesome! I was going to wire the dashcam up the windshield and to the roof, to the right pillar, and down/behind the glovebox to the 12v plug. Otherwise my other option was to attempt using a USB cable and wiring it into the USB plug in the glovebox itself since I know that shuts off with the car.

That's exactly what I did... I routed the wiring down the A pillar, ran it across the pillar where it meets the upper dash, and tucked it underneath the rubber seals on the door opening and under the floor mat to the socket.

Have you experienced problems with your battery draining? I'm thinking of doing the same (plugging into outlet under dash box in my 2013 335ix) but not sure if I need to purchase a power device to protect battery.

I assume parking mode works for the few minute the camera is on, then stops when outlet powers off?

I have LED DRLs that I added wired to the fuse for that outlet. When I unlock the car they turn on, when I lock the car they stay on for ten minutes and then shut off. There's no need for battery protection.

I have it set up this way as well. No issues with battery draining. Parking mode works till the outlet powers off.

I've had the dash cam plugged in for over a year and a half now, no issues with the battery. The camera stays on after I turn off the car until the power outlet shuts off completely.

My dash cam doesn't have a "parking" mode where it's on standby and starts recording automatically when it detects vibration. I got one without that feature on purpose since I was afraid of it draining battery.

Could you guys post pictures of how you routed the wire? Did you hide it under the A-pillar cover?
