320 D engine tone from cold start
On these cold mornings, there is a medium tone/pitch noise which increases when the engine is revved. I can only describe this as 'turbo whistle'. This does go completely once the engine has warmed up after a mile or two. Is this normal because I have read somewhere that the turbo's work differently until they have reached optimum temperature. Does your 320 D have this characteristic?
Thanks in advance. |

Can't say I have noticed mine making any whistling noise - although it sounds like a tractor on a cold morning. I would advise that you get it checked out. I am sure I have read someone here with associating whining noises with transmission, and having the tranny replaced. Good Luck!

My 320D has been whistling (dump valve sound) in the morning quite noticeably but isn't any different in terms of performance and does disappear once the oil is up to temperature (any maybe I'm then not accelerating as much as I'm into my journey)

it is definitely not transmission related as it does it at standstill. I had it checked by my local dealer toady who says this is perfectly normal until the turbo reaches the correct operating temperature.
Thanks. |

If it is turbo noise, this is very random. The 330D I test drove had a very 'vocal' turbo, and so too it seems the test car Autocar drove. Yet my 330D turbo is totally silent from the cabin. You might just have a more 'vocal' turbo....nothing wrong with it.
Keep an eye on it, if it gets louder then worry. |
