Driving on run flat with sidewall blowout
I had a blow out two nights ago, and was able to drive the ten miles home on the run flat, so they proved their worth (although, I don't think I would have had a blowout on a conventional tire). My question is, with it sitting and having sidewall damage, is it safe to drive the four miles to the tire shop from my house? I don't want to cause any further damage to the vehicle. It drove fairly well under 50 mph on the way home, all things considered. Attached are pictures of the damage.

It might make it, it might not. It got you home, so in that sense it did its job. I'd be inclined to say don't press your luck, lest you damage the rim.

I had a similar situation, but just a nail in the tire. It got me home but sat overnight before I could drive to the dealer in the morning. The ride was similar to a regular flat after sitting over night. Seems like the sidewall lost its stiffness over time with the full load of the car on it overnight while flat.

Do you have another car?
If so jack up your car, remove the wheel and bring it to the shop to get a new one fitted.

If you/a friend have AAA, just have the car flatbedded to the tire shop. I wouldn't drive on it like that, it doesn't seem safe.
If not, maybe try out the BMW roadside assist, have it taken to the dealer. Charles

yeah I would have it flatbed to dealer. Which RFT is that? Perilli or Conti? and how did the tire just "blow" did you hit something or was it a mfg. defect? the dealer may be able to get you money back thru the tire mfg. Happened to my Perilli on my old car and BMW got me the money back for replacement under mfg defect reason "side wall collapse"

1. I would take it off and bring the wheel in for tire replacement.
2. Swap on a winter wheel/tire if you have and drive to shop. 3. Drive the 4 miles slowly and have a passenger keep an eye on it. 4. I would only consider towing it if I had zero other options. I never ever want to hook my car up to a tow truck - flatbed or otherwise. Have you seen how many tow truck operators treat cars. Or throw the money out the window. Tow will cost nearly as much as a new wheel in the unlikely event you damage it driving slow for 4 miles. If this weren't a run flat, I would not drive 50 feet on a dead flat tire - rim damage almost immediately.

Thanks to everyone who replied. I took the wheel off and had it replaced with a used tire with matching wear to the other 3. I hit a bump in the road. I did not see a pot hole. I was thinking of taking it to the dealer to try to warranty it, but assumed that would be hard to prove. Now I'm second guessing my decision since a previous reply was able to get their money back.

On the other hand, I had a recent experience with my BMW (not related to tires) and used the service manager as my ambassador and it helped. So...working through one's dealership might help. |

I'm not sure the specifics of the new car warranty with tires, but that looks like a pretty good whack. Probably a road defect you didn't see. Tire defect is unlikely. So unless you have road hazard warranty, you could try, but I would say, "**it happens" and move on and not feel bad you had to pay for a used tire.
Just trying to stay inside the intent of the type of warranty you have. Even though people will try to get anything they can and I understand that, as companies always try to take anything they can, but sometimes it just isn't worth the argument if it is likely not a defect anyway. Glad you could get it resolved with no additional cost or damage than was already done.
