Sat in a 2016 today

My dealer has a 2016 328i Xdrive so of course I had to check it out. Mediterranean Blue - Beautiful color. The LCI is really attractive overall. No more lines. Sport package is now included. Unfortunately thats where the freebies end on this model… For a MSRP was $46,500, I was expecting nicely equipped. Metallic paint, heated seats, premium package, lighting package. Thats it. And the worst thing of all is you have to pay $2500 to get the premium package so that you can pay 800 for the LED lighting package. You'd need to spend another $600 to get 18" wheels. I've owned a few BMW's over the years - So much for reasonably priced 328's, unfortunately those days are long gone…

Non-adaptive LEDs are INCLUDED in the premium package. The $800 Lighting package brings Adaptive LEDs and automatic high beams.

The fact is when prices are adjusted for inflation 3ers are generally less expensive today than 10, 15, 20 years ago when equivalently equipped, except that now you still get more standard stuff (better transmission, better brakes, more & better airbags, better air conditioner, rain sensing wipers, etc) than you did then. It is the new, high-tech options that didn't exist back then that push prices up further today.

Thanks for clarifying

So: Mediterranean Blue Metallic, $550, Premium Package (includes non-adaptive LED's), $2,450, 18" wheels, $600, Heated Seats, $500

Total MSRP: $45,445. Assumed sales price: $41,000

Enough value to justify the price?

Standard HK only on the 340i. Still an $875 option on the 328i. Yeah, Sport automatic with paddle shifters now standard, which had been a $500 option.

Well, gives me something to think about... Still several months until my current lease is up, but perhaps I will test drive the 16 soon to see if there are any significant improvements to overall ride quality compared to my 13 328 Xdrive. Cheers

The base prices have increased with all this too so its not like BMW is offering this for free all of a sudden.

That's correct. Although i believe the current 340i with all the "extra goodies" is still a little cheaper, if not the same as similarly equipped 335i.

About $2000 increase in base price?

That's true. Compared to a "stripper" pre-LCI the new model is more expensive. However, the LCI offers a fairly significant savings over an equivalently equipped pre-LCI. So, you can't go as "stripper" as you could.

An LCI 340i is about $2,000 less than an equivalently equipped 335i.

I may be mistaken, but the LCI is the same price as a pre-LCI Sports Line and comes with the same features (wheels, brakes, etc?) and comes with more with no additional fee: HK audio, better engine, paddle shifters, probably more whatever they are.

Unless I am mistaken in that the Sports Line comes with more features? They look to be the same though.

Although I haven't made myself entirely familiar with the new prices, I think that depends on whether you are talking about the 340i or 328i. For the 340i, yes. The 328i, no (no new engine and no standard HK audio). OP is looking at the 328i.

It's been a while since I compared, but IIRC the 340i made out well in the LCI. It's a much better deal compared to my 2014 335i in terms of options/content for the money. About 2k more stuff included as someone mentioned.

And inflation is really a sneaky thing. I think my first 1995 E36 325i cost 32.5k for auto, sport, premium, no xenons, no side airbags, no homelink, no smartphone interface, no HK, not much of anything really other than leather and a really engaging drive. It had a whopping 189HP, and roughly the same torque IIRC.

In 2015 dollars that's 50.8k, almost what my moderately well-equipped 300hp 335i cost.

I just recently picked up my 2016 LCI with xDrive and I love it pricing doesnt seem appropriate when you're looking at MSRP or a BMW configurator screen, but when you get out and drive the car and negotiate a decent price I feel that the value is definitely there. OP, if you get xDrive I would go ahead and spring for the Dynamic Handling Package. Just my opinion.

I priced a car equipped the same as my 2014 (Sport Line, MG paint, heated seats) and it's about $1000 less than what I paid. This includes the 18" wheel option.

Keep in mind the premium package doesn't include leather now. So to add leather and a rear camera that's another $2400 (1450 + 950). I would definitely add $875 for the HK--no way I'm getting another car with this base stereo in it.

So, 2015 premium package was $3,100 & lighting package (adaptive xenons) was $900 = $4,000. 2016 premium package (including non-adaptive LEDs) is $2,450 + $1,450 for leather = $3,900. So, one question that goes along with that is, are the non-adaptive LEDs sufficiently better than xenons that the fact they are not adaptive offset by their superiority?

I really like the adaptive feature of my xenons and I am really curious whether I would find the non-adaptive LEDs good enough to make me feel like it wasn't worth it to me to spend the extra cash to get the adaptive feature with them.

It may be worth noting that if one chooses the 2016 lighting package you also get automatic high-beams, which was previously a $250 option, so the net extra for adaptive LEDs is $450 compared to the 2015 equivalent option combination.

I have the same curiosity regarding non-adaptive LED vs. adaptive Xenons.

The recent add of Saddle Brown as a leather option looks really sharp. I visited San Antonio BMW a couple of weeks ago and sat in a 4'er with the new leather - definitely worth a look.

I recently came across some retro MotorWeek videos on Youtube of their tests of E30, E36, and E46 3ers. The asking prices were interesting to say the least. I may have to post a thread of them so folks can see the comparison of then and now. Other than prices one thing I noticed was that body roll through the slalom was more than most people probably correctly recall.

It is what it is. Who am I kidding, I'll probably end up with aforementioned spec'd car when my lease is up, lol. It doesn't help the dealer is 3 miles away. They had two M4's out front yesterday. Must... Resist... Must...

I am addicted to that show.. But....Some of their tests are questionable.. for example (not retro show) the M235i ran a 14.0 in the 1/4th? I'm not sure I would trust anything from them after that... but still a fun show to watch, especially the retro ones .
