I picked up my new 2013 335i last week and it doesn't seem to have the new system. I had the car built and put the order in only 2 months ago (March 15). Does anyone know if there's a way to upgrade? What's the official version number of the new system, so I can inform my dealer?

If your car was built with CIC and not NBT, there is no official upgrade path from BMW. You would have to retfofit NBT on your own, and it will be several thousand dollars to do it, and you will have to swap back in your factory original CIC system if your car requires any dealer programming, as ISTA/P will reject NBT in your car.

Was that an option that I missed when requesting the build? Why would it be built with CIC instead of NBT? Thanks!

You missed nothing. The option is 609 Professional Navigation. It's just BMW decides in their infinite wisdom which chassis by country gets the new NBT iDrive system and beginning with what model year and production date. Your build didn't meet their criteria.

If one retrofits a factory NBT in place of a factory CiC why would one have to remove it Everytime the car goes in for programming. Can BMW not acknowledge upgrade and act accordingly? If not, is there a technical reason?

ISTA/P will reject it, as when it goes to program the car it will looK for the factory original CIC and won't find it, and it will stop and say replace CIC module.

can BMW not update their database so that the ISTA diagnostics system does not throw an error? Is there a technical barrier to this?

Thanks for the response Shawn

I don't know if it is technically possible or not, but it's a moot point because even if it was possible, BMW will never allow it, as it is an unofficial retofit and they will not support it.

They would only do this for upgrades done by a dealer, as everything else is "unofficial".

The NBT is not worth several thousand dollars over the CIC based system in the 2013 (USA) nav system. It IS nicer, no doubt, as its MUCH faster, however its not worth several thousand k.

Probably a stupid question but if my Vehicle Inquiry report for my order says "609 Navigation System" does that indicate CIC, NBT, or doesn't mean anything at all?

Thanks

It means nothing at all. 609 Nav Pro can be delivered with either CIC or NBT.

You are correct, I just reread the thread a little further I was confused by some of the posts with US individuals having NBT but when reading further I see that they have the AH3.

Just ordered a 335i MSport in Perth, Western Australia this morning. Talked to the dealer manager about the MY14 rumours I'd seen here and he'd JUST (yesterday, IIRC) received a bulletin from BMW on this. Supposedly, in Australia, the MY14 run will commence in August this year and will include iDrive Touch features, upgraded Nav 'from the 7 series' as well as a few other items.

I've delayed my build to August, accordingly :-)

FWIW!

Correct, for the 3 series to have NBTin the US, you have to have the AH3. My experience with the NBT is from my wifes AH5 (2013) , while I have a 2013 335 with a Jan 13 build date that has the CIC. Both show 609 professional navigation as neither one of my cars has the tech package but has stand alone nav.

The difference between 2013 and 2014 in the US is the 2014 3 series will come with the NBT, and also have the touch wheel (which I dont see being very useful actually).

if your buying then I would definitely wait until 2014. New nav and you get a newer year car for resale purposes. If your leasing, you can get a better deal at the end of the model year and I would do it now and get the new nav with the body style adjustments on your next lease

I ordered about 10 days ago and I decided to do that because of the following:
  • 1.9% interest rate
  • I am paying between invoice and $90 over invoice depending on what you see the invoice is
  • I get the $750 conquest cash
  • My current car (Acura TL) is getting a model change in Jan 2014 so I anticipate the value of my car taking a dive.

Based on when I was looking last year in Oct the best I could get was $1500 over invoice and the incentives seemed to suck though maybe I missed a window of really good incentives and deals?

The new NAV does look better and I would like to have it but it isn't a deal breaker honestly.

I could really care less about the new software features, the only thing that gets me down is the faster hardware. Either way, it's still gets you from point A to point B.

The way I look at it, cars are only temporary, in 5-6 years you are going to have a new one (maybe sooner, maybe longer) and it will have better stuff in it too.

If I had the option to wait, I would, but right now I'm without a car and this really isn't a reason to stay a couple more months without a car or waste money renting another in addition to paying higher prices on the next model.

For you, you'll only have it if you drive an active-hybrid 3 or own a yet to be released 2014 model. NA 3 series otherwise still have the CIC.
