I found the engine to be superb and although the 118i has the same performance the 320i feels much stronger and quite a bit smooter IMO, maybe due to the 118i being a 1.6 turbo - maybe its a little bit more strained but with the 320i featuring the lowest power N20 its not so. Collection is now scheduled for Monday |

Also agree it is the near constant speed driving, over distance, where the diesel really comes into its own. Also in those circumstances winter temperatures don't take the same toll on mpg figures. But the average driver, making average journeys, mostly from cold, there is that fuel consumption penalty to factor in. HighlandPete |

I brimmed the tank last weekend and on a 70 mile round trip mixed with dual carriageway, motorway and town driving I got 56 mpg. Then with the commute to to work (10 mile return trip) it dropped to 40mpg over the course of the week. I then did the 70 mile trip again this weekend and have got it back up to 43mpg. It seems 43mpg is my lot based on my typical journeys. I should have probably got a petrol but there were no decent spec demo ones available at the time.

I've had my car now for 3 weeks and done just over 3k miles in it.
I can honestly say the MPG is phenomenal - I drive mainly long distances but even when I've maintained the speed over 80 it still outperforms my old Golf Bluemotion. For example, I did a 150 mile run and the journey computer showed an average of 76 mph and the mpg was 66.4. On another run the traffic was a little heavier and I averaged just under 70 mph but the mpg was 72.3. Considering how cold it's been since I've had the car I'm very enthused as to what I'll get in the summer months. |

My question was more around how does ED work - I've not read the bunf from BMW on it yet...

The ED has a slightly different engine configuration to the normal 320D, lower power output 163hp vs. 184hp, and also other energy saving features, like the special Michelin energy saving tyres, longer gear ratios, etc.

My ED came with 16" Goodyear energy saving runflats. In the winter I've been running Bridgestone LM-32 runflats.

Do you think the mpg will go up when you put the summer tyre back on? I imagine the 109g/km CO2 was fairly easy for BMW to hit on the F30. My guess is they will launch an ED2 with all the extra features they used on E90. |

I've done 4500 miles so far, mixed driving when commuting daily to and from work of 60 miles on town and motorway - averaging 50 mpg . Using eco pro most of the time. A brim to brim gives 600 - 620 miles

right...1000 miles in.....average 43mpg....all done in comfort mode with fairly sedate driving and not going above 80mph on dual carriageways. mixture of daily commute (20miles; 1/2 dual carriageway 1/2 urban) and three long runs circa 150 miles a pop.
my last brim to brim fill up....is averaging 39mpg...all work commute. Engine/oil doesnt get full warmed up and its bloody freezing....using heated seats int he morning mind! dont know whether im happy with that or slightly annoyed! |

Can't say I've checked whether the grill has the flaps like the E90 ED. I suspect my mpg will get better as the temperature improves, don't know if that's just general or down to the tyres. Wasn't looking for an ED specifically when I bought it, but I absolutely love it

Yep you can tell its warming up, my all time average over the last few weeks has now crept up to 49.6 from 49.1, the car has 4200 miles on the clock, no change to driving habits its just getting warmer.
