Bricked the Computer!

So my car went in to have the ASS disabled (remember last setting) and in the process, they bricked the programming. SM called to let me know the BMW engineers are trying to figure it out but I won't get the car back.

Was looking forward to a nice weekend with it (we won't have too many more) ... had it for less than a week before it went in on Wednesday. I have an X3 loaner which is like driving a boat in comparison. I guess the good news is that BMW authorized $500 in credit towards accessories or performance gear for my trouble.

So be careful if you take it to get that feature shut off!

That really blows! Hope you get your car back soon. I plan on getting the ASS coded on mine once I take delivery as well.. hopefully they don't brick it. It's hard enough waiting months to take delivery.. teasing you for a week and taking it away indefinitely won't sit well with me

Here's what happened as I understand it...

Apparently, the car was so new, the software they had at the dealership for the 2013 335 xdrive sedan was older than what was already in the car. So, they had to obtain the new software from BMW, which they apparently did, but in the process of changing the actual setting, one of the modules got corrupted. BMW is "in" the car trying to sort out what happened and get it back to normal.

I just find it bizarre it's such a fiasco to change a simple setting. It's also ridiculous that the dealers have to go through so much to get software the BMW should be providing when they program the cars with whatever version at the factory. This was the first time the dealer did this ASS setting... the notice form BMW allowing dealers to do it one time for free just came out so they are expecting more of these to come soon because people hate that stupid feature almost unanimously.

So we'll see what happens. SM called me 10:30a this morning and said they were still working on it. it's now almost 3p now and I have not heard back so it looks like I'm stuck with the X3 over the weekend... if not longer!

I find it funny that so many of us have changed this at home with no issue but the dealership effs it up. Sorry to hear for your inconvenience!

At least you had your car a week. I had mine a whole day before it went in for service.

Baha ha ... Sorry not laughing at your misfortune, but rather the fact that I coded this myself. When the dealer manages to fack it up, you really do have to question who's working there and their knowledge/ability.

Wish you were local!! I'd have come to see you and be driving right now!!

Oh well. Guess I'll put the $500 (so far... we'll see how long this drags out), towards M Performance Exhaust or the new M Performance Package, and make them give me the package at a dealer price!

I asked for my dealer to code my ass when my car was delivered. My ca told me this was their first coding on an f30 and to let him know how it came out. Needless to say it works half the time I need to bring it back haven't found the time.

My dealer said they'd need a couple days in the shop to do it. So I figured I'd wait until first service.

I usually disable it upon startup, and noticed that once disabled, you can't re-enable it while the car is running.

So if it's disabled at startup can you enable it if you wanted?

I honestly don't know because I never had any desire to turn the stupid thing back on!! lol I have an X3 loaner and it has the feature too. I'll try turning it back on after I turn it off and let you know.

My programming also got bricked in the process while setting up the ASS update. I couldn't really blame the programmer as there was a power outage that created the problems.

I was given a 328i sedan loaner for a day and they were able to resolve the issue to my Bimmer back up and running. ASS update works great and stays in the off position - just how I like it

I've used it a couple times on some very long lights. But normally I'd rather have it off.

Yes do post your results.

I turn mine on/off all the time in the car, while driving. I have a setting from coding that enables it to 'remember' the last setting... so if it's off when the car turns off, it will be off when the car turns on. If I remember correctly, I think the setting is also dependent on the drive mode (ECO/Comfort/Sport)... so there might be some switching around until you figure it out.

You should be able to enable and disable it whenever you want. The coding that the dealer does is just to remember the last setting when you turned off the car.

Also, if you have an Auto and put it in manual, it will automatically disable ASS.

I'm sorry for the OP too, but I did it with the help of a forum member and it was shockingly easy - and I'm no programmer believe me.

OP, hope you're up and running soon!

Power outage shouldn't have affected the programming (as they're working off of a laptop)?

Anyway - ASS should remember last setting once you have it coded, however if you have the setting set to "off" and then switch to eco mode, eco mode automatically re-engages ASS, so you will need to turn it off again (even if you have had it programmed). just an FYI.

that sucks, i imagine it also is a kick in the ass for bmw seeing how they have to send engineers who are probably paid a pretty penny just to fix an issue such as that. good luck
