Great info. I just got an F10 535i up from 2007 328i coupe that had the base hifi. Pre-LCI was actually not as god awful as the post LCI. The premium 16 speaker HK in the new to me F10 is really quite good.
Sound is subjective and what sounds good to my fairly good oldish audiophile ears and taste is not the same as many of yours. IN the F10 forums I found an EQ setting from a sound engineer chap in the UK and its not the obvious "U" shape that many use to get the desired loudness most find appealing. I was not thrilled at first but I noticed the "Boom" was gone and instead the "Kick" was more pronounced. This produced a tighter bass which is very satisfying at mid volume levels. For those with EQ's: Fader +2 towards rear Treble +4 Bass 0 Surround off!!! 100Hz -2 200Hz -1 500Hz 0 1KHz +2 2KHz -3 5KHz +4 10KHz +6 Once set I only use bass or treble settings very little to make any changes not touching the EQ. I suggest you experiment by leaving it alone a few days and let your ears adjust. You might be happy afterwards. Or not. Im not going to put down anyone who desires bombastic bass as there is no right or wrong here. I like this setting with people in the car and can converse with them. IN my home I have a few fine audio systems and a home theatre that all have different characteristics. Acoustic treatments are always needed to achieve the proper environment. Of course, none worse than trying to do this in a car! No doubt putting in new equipment should sound better but at the end of the day I have heard many systems that have hot spots and have little ambience as one can tell where the sound is coming from. Great systems seem to just blend in as one where great components sometimes just don't add up. Or, "the sum should be greater than the parts"! Thus, I am not always quick to upgrade just because the speakers have more exotic elements and bigger magnets! This is just me, I don't expect all to agree! I recall our first system with under seat woofers and it was a 2000 ML320 with the bose system. Let me preface that I am not a big fan of bose's trickery and marketing but this car really had a nice mid bass punch and we liked it. I also use their Environmental 251's in an outdoor room that is 16x20 using 4 of them powered by a mid level Yamaha integrated Amp and for an outdoor space the speakers are non directional and the soundscape is wonderful at medium volume! They are also durable. Can 5 inch mid bass woofers shake the room? Never, but they sound nice. They have been in production for years and for good reason. Thus, my expectation for the ghosts are not that high and I don't think I will get them anytime soon as I have satisfactory tuned things to my liking. That "Gap" that was apparent when I first took delivery of the car has been largely been removed with the above tune. Its a three year old 535i with less than 30k miles on it and just got it last week. Still have to put some tint on it and a few other goodies. but I am going to keep an eye on the ghosts and keep reading. Looks like a nice DIY and while not cheap, if I don't have to wire anyting, install amps, fabricate a housing or pay for an install then its really not that expensive. The question is does its inclusion add up on a the F10 premium system?

Would these be worth the upgrade on a stock hifi system for $275? I found a gently used set and would be installing them with the stock hifi amp, mids and tweeters.

Yea just got the ghost subs installed tonight. Took me about 2 hours taking my time and vacuuming under the seats in 100+ degree weather lol. Mine came with the weather strip thingys in grey color. My enclosures already had the white gaskets, but I used the grey ones on top anyways. I can tell an immediate difference in tighter bass. Will know better after its broken in by next week or so.
Now if I can only get rid of the outside rattle on the driver side door I'd be 100% happy. But that's another thread.

For those of you with a 2012 F30 with Hi-Fi and with Bimmer-tech amp, do you remember if you got/ordered the 2 Ohm or 4 Ohm. My confirmation order says I got the 4 Ohm, but when I double checked BAVSound's site it recommended 2 Ohm. Confused.

I guess I feel better about having the 4 Ohm version. Saves me 2 hours of re-do work.
