Windshield crack

I was driving on the freeway when a rock hit my shield and created a 8" crack on the edge of the windshield. It appears to be expanding, and I'd prefer not going through insurance because I have a 1K deductible. My lease ends in seven months, and I have wear and tear insurance that would cover the damage. Is there anything I can do to prevent the crack from expanding? Thanks.

What state do you live in? Certain states have zero dollar deductibles for glass damage.

Yes, but it's not easily executed. Get a glass or ceramic drill bit, high-speed drill, and drill a tiny (2-3 mm diameter) superficial (just the top glass layer, not through the laminate) hole right where the crack stops. You should be able to arrest the spread with just the superficial hole, then apply some crazy glue to cover the hole. Videos on YouTube.

I have the same damn issue. I tried stopping the crack from spreading at least twice but it just keeps going unfortunately. Does anyone know what it would cost to replace? I don't have head up display btw!

i replaced my windshield for $280 cash to a mobile window replacement guy that my bodyshop referred me to
went with aftermarket glass

i didn't have any special windshield (heads up display or anything)
just rain sensor

i could have gone through safelite or one of those
for about $500-600 for aftermarket
or $700+ for BMW original

you can't drive around for 7 months with that windshield like that; it's unsafe and illegal. Some states mandate that insurance have no deductible for glass breakage; you should check that.

You can do Safe Lite for way under your deductible.

Question for the thread owner (OP), do you have HUD option?

Very helpful thread to review.

I called the insurance, and there is a separate insurance for windshield, so the damage wouldn't be covered.

Thank you. I do have HUD, and I think it would be cheaper to get the OEM windshield online and have it installed.

You don't have glass insurance?

Edit - sorry, re-read your OP. You have glass, but a $1k deductible. HUD windshields are expensive, well over $1k (at least in Canada). My deductible on glass is $200 - too bad you took the high deductible.

Just get aftermarket, it would be vastly cheaper. You just need polarized glass for the HUD. With your car's age, there would be options for aftermarket.

You'd need to replace it for the lease turn in anyways.

I guess it's time to change your insurance coverage, if you can't stomach a $1,000 deductible.

Duct tape it. As it expands over the next 7 months, just add more tape.

Doesn't matter the size of the crack, all you're doing is stopping the spread. If it's traveling on both directions then drill at both ends. Did it on my beater a couple months back Not a perfect fix, you'll still have the crack and spot, but easy way to buy some time until you can get it fixed, w/o it getting worse.
