This here will be one of a few last posts I will be making. A spontaneous decision has made me trade my car in and revert to an E92.
Past couple weeks I have been having a terrible time pinning down a good e85 mix and the results I think could have been catastrophic. Within the last few weeks I have been getting hesitation and at times some horrible detonation that sounded like a rod was about to blow through the block. This hesitation always occurred at 4k no matter what gear which is what gets me the most, different gear - different load but still happening at 4k. I have worked with different mixes between 30 and 45% with improvements in the lower ratios but nothing 100% satisfying. This past Friday was the second time I have received a horrible stumble that almost fell on it's face. This is directly following some bad hesitation. The first time it cleared up pretty quickly after I pulled over and restarted. The second time I wasn't so lucky. I had to stumble 3 miles (luckily only 3) to the closest Orielly's to pull the codes, this was after removing the JB4. There were about 7 of them and all relating to misfire, including all 4 cylinders. During these 2 instances I would the drivetrain malfunction warning. The stumble was gone after it sat for 30 minutes once back home. I blame running map 7 24/7. Call it paranoid, precautious or what have you but it's just not a chance I wanted to take. The car ran perfect otherwise. I spent from 9pm last night to 6:30 am this morning stripping the car of all modifications and returning it to stock form. I had listed the parts on the for sale section and priced to sell..... http://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1118654 I would really like to get rid of this stuff asap so I can continue in the tuning world with my n55. I wanted to stay with BMW and figured the n55 is a great platform that is proven. I chose a 2012 m sport model as I couldn't afford the F series 335. We were introduced to BMW with my wife's '08 e92 328 which had the n52 but was really overall happy with the car. It's definitely true that prior F series cars were built with better quality and craftsmanship. With all this said I will be moving over to e90post but will be checking in here until my items are sold. Last edited by f30luxline; 04-26-2015 at 12:21 PM.. |

That sucks man. you know that map7 is very very aggressive for daily driving, I had hesitation & thought is something from jb4. but it turned out car needed spark plugs..
are you planning on going to dealer with stock mod to find out what's wrong ? |

Plugs were changed. Next step would have been changing the coils. The car is already gone so I can't take it to the dealer for them to diagnose it in stock form. I didn't want to be bothered with stripping the car just to have to bring it to the dealer for a stock diagnoses and then have to re-install everything. With the history of the n20 (or lack of) I wasn't taking anything chances driving it anywhere but the dealer to get rid of it. Safe tuning everyone Last edited by f30luxline; 04-27-2015 at 05:58 PM.. |

Bummer, you did a good job pushing the envelope with the N20. But it's probably for the best to go with an N55 if you want to do that. Good luck, the 335 looks awesome

What a bummer. Sad to see you go, I always enjoyed reading about what the N20 is capable of.
Have fun with your e90, don't forget to send us a postcard every once in a while . |

We all have a better idea now what the breaking point might be. It has been just about 1 year that I have been running map 7 (80% of the time). I have stated my driving style as many of you know. Put 2 and 2 together and use good judgement to protect the integrity of this fragile motor. As the community grows we need everyone's participation to make proper decisions going forward. Everyone would be lost if it weren't for forums like this. The most important part is being knowledgeable enough and to listen to your motor. Know when something is going wrong and when to pull back. I love the E92 platform. I will still use this thread so you all can follow progress of it. Hopefully in the next week I can have a direction of how I will be going for a tune and exhaust. There are now so many options available. The market is enormous for the n55. Piggies I am considering Cobb or having a custom flash locally, the market is quite large here in Atlanta and there are 2 big players. For you local guys I will be contacting Markert Motor Works and Buckhead Imports I should be able to find out more info on these tomorrow. |

Congrats! Was going to say I was hoping you would go n54 or n55 for power.
With a simple tune you'll get a good amount. But if you do FBO + e85 it will be crazy fast.

How much power did your car put down before you hit the limit so to speak?
The E92 looks much more refined than the F30 imo and should be a very fun platform for more power. Hell, I'm looking at an E92 too, as a project car.

Congrats, the E92 looks in a great shape!
Looking at you N20 build, I was starting to ask myself how much is too much, especially for a daily driver I personally never went beyond a Stage 2+ tuning to preserve drivability and reliability. I had tuned my GTI to 300hp and drove the new S3 (~300hp too) and I could feel that this was as much as the 2L 4 cylinder could give. There are ways to go (much) higher, but the throttle and overall engine response become too brutal, jerky etc. IMHO. As a last personal thought -sorry if I start pontificating- my experience over the years has been that spending your car budget on using its power (track days) is just as fun, if not more, than adding power to it. The N55 will give you a nicer and higher baseline to work from and in some aspects, the E9x platform is better then the F3x. I hope you'll enjoy it!

Actually you should have no issues daily driving with e85. I know many people with n55's who do it. No issues. This motor is nothing like your n20, its a beast, and it can handle abuse. I have a friend with an n55 335xi fbo + meth + e85 and its been like that for a while.

PS: Your F30 (and probably soon your E92) are perfectly 'trackable' but it is true that tires, brakes and track insurance rapidly add up. If you did it only once a year, the BMW CCA school at Road Atlanta (one week end in March or September) is a great place to start.

I have thought about changing the name but will be keeping it. I actually haven't had much interest. I might drop the pricing down to the cost of the new e92 parts which are a lot cheaper than f30 parts. This will be a steel for anyone. Example is the IC I am looking at is only $450!! |
