19" Wheels - Ride? M-Performance Brakes - 18" Fit?
I'm contemplating buying a used 435i that has the blue M-performance brakes and 19" wheels. This vehicle also has the adaptive suspension.
Are there any folks on the board that have a 4 Series with 19" wheels that can answer these questions: 1. For those with 19" and run flats, talk about the ride quality 2. For those who switched to non run flats, talk about the ride quality 3. Suppose I bought this car and swapped out the 19" for 18" wheels. Will 18" wheels fit over the blue M-performance brakes? |

The performance and comfort of run flat tires will vary brand by brand. Perhaps the harshest and least liked: Bridgestone Potenza S001. Much better: Pirelli Cinturato - which are on my current vehicle. I have no complaints.

19" Wheels Ride
I currently drive a 2018 440i M Sport with 19" wheels and Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 run flats. The ride with Track Handling Package is great in comfort mode although I keep it in sport mode plus most of the time and the ride is firm but more than acceptable. I previously had Bridgestone Potenza run flats on my 435i and I much prefer the Goodyear Eagles. It is a great tire. I also have the M brakes and love them. I believe they will work with 18" wheels as well.

I'm riding on the Potenzas and they haven't been good... No experience with the Pirellis or Eagles though.
Been contemplating swapping them out. I loved the PSSs on my old M235i - everyone have experience putting those on the 19" 442? Haven't seen much talk about people doing that and am curious if there's a reason for it. |

Thanks for everyone's comments and experiences. I currently have a 2004 330Ci ZHP convertible and it has 18" wheels having the same sidewall ratio aspect profiles (40 front and 35 rear) as the 19" 442M wheels on the 435ix convertible being considered. My E46 has a good, taut ride with Continental DWS tires. I've been reading comments about the 19" wheels on a car with adaptive suspension having a comfortable ride.

1. The drive quality of run flat is like Fred Flintstone wheels
2. Standard performance tire on a bmw make it drive like a luxury sport car 3. As far as I'm aware yes. |

They were swapped for a set of Michelin PSS after about 30,000km. These transformed my ride and handling. The rear pair of PSS lasted 50,000kms (but still had 3mm of tread) and were replaced with another pair of PSS. The front pair of PSS are still doing a great job after 55,000km with at least 5mm of tread left.

This is all so subjective, that it is really not valid to answer or think an answer is correct. Some people think a Mclaren P1 is an acceptable daily and not to harsh. Others think you have to be riding in a Maybach to have a comfortable ride, and anything short of that is going to give you back pain.

I have a 16 340 xDrive with the track package, 19" wheels with summer RFT and the adaptive suspension. I also have a set of OEM 397 18" all season RFT for the winter.
I am very impressed at the smoothness of this car with both sets of rims / tires. Obv the 18" is a bit smoother, but even with the 19" the ride is very comfortable. This is from a guy who drives mainly in Queens, Manhattan and Long Island, so not a place with smooth roads. In fact, my 2013 Acura TL-SHAWD with 18" wheels rode much harsher. I felt every little bump with that car and the adaptive suspension on the 340 does a really good job at absorbing those bumps. There is one downside though. For deep bumps, my Acura took it better because it was a bigger car which was higher and looks to have had a deeper spring setup (so took a bigger bump to reach full compression on the spring). I would not hesitate to get the 19" setup with the adaptive suspension. I am looking to replace my car with an M3 (if there are any left by the time my lease is up at the end of the year) and can only hope that it rides this well. |

I've owned a 2013 435i with adaptive suspension and m sport brakes for 4 years and I can answer a couple of your questions. 1) run flats are crap. Makes hitting a pothole feel like your wheel explodes. Less than average grip and harsh ride quality. 2) swapped out to Michelin pilot super sports and Michelin pilot sport 4S, the difference is night and day. Ride quality is supple, grip is phenomenal in both dry and wet and I get 30,000-35,000kms out of a set. 3) haven't tried 18" rims. All the best |

18” rims and tires will work and if your swapping go for non run flats. Not all 18” wheels will clear so you need to be cautious.
If you are going to that trouble frankly I would do as others suggest and just swap to non runflats on your stock wheels. I am ordering Michelin ps4 s for mine to replace the stock Bridgestone runflats |

Agreed. I have a 335i with sport brakes and adaptive with 18 in OEM 400M wheels as well. Considering 19s for summer setup but will not go with run flats due to ride quality.

No problems here on 19's. Adaptive suspension helps though. Comfort mode is good but a bit down on power. Sport mode is jarring but good on a track or smooth surface. Never really had an issue on 19's come to think of it.

I have the 340i which is similar. I have 19" with p zero run flats. Ride quality is Lexus like in comfort, better than some economy cars and not bad in sport mode but you have to be more careful over rough roads when the suspension is in the stiffer mode.

I also have a 340i. I haven't changed by runflat stock summer 19"s so I can't compare the difference, but I don't mind them. I do, however, have non-run flats for my winters and there is a significant difference in ride feel (not as tight or stable with the winters than the summer tires). Agreed with above posts that the bigger difference in ride is Sport mode vs Comfort mode, though.
I have an entire winter set up on 18" rims and they fit fine on the blue M brakes. That said, I am not certain that ALL 18" rims will fit, so you should be careful before you make a purchase to measure or mount the wheel and see if it fits. Though, I would venture to say that most 18" rims will fit. Good luck!

I have a 340i and changed the s001 runflats to ps4s. The difference in comfort was barely noticeable. I have 19 inch rims. However this does speak volumes about the adaptive suspension and the changes made with the LCI suspension.
I did find that my LCI felt more comfortable than my MY14 328i with the same setup. I changed my s001 on the 328 to the MPSS. This was more comfortable than the PS4S but only by a small margin. The PS4S has a ton of grip, more so than the MPSS. |

I currently own a 2014 435i xDrive M Sport with the 19s, M brakes and M adaptive suspension. I got rid of the RFT mostly because they kept bubbling on the side wall. I didn't think the ride quality was too bad. I went with Continental DWS 06 non RF, and the ride quality did improve some as did the handling since they have a bit more give in corners compared to the RFT. I drive in sport mode 98% of the time and I like the firmness of the suspension. In comfort it's noticeably softer as is the steering, so I like to have the option to switch if I like.

Ive got 19" rims on my 4GC LCI plus adaptive. The ride is okay although slightly firmer than my pre-LCI 3 Touring with adaptive.
The problem however is the tyres, which I am changing shortly. They are Bridgestone Potenza RFT's, which spoil the ride, making it fidgety and jittery on all but the smoothest surfaces. They are the worst BMW approved RFT's by a mile. Will either be going for Goodyear Eagle F1 RFT's or Pirelli/Continental non RFTs
