2017 iDrive iPod
I have a MY17 4Series with the new iDrive. It's refusing to see all legacy devices. I have 3 different iPods (8GB Nano, 80GB & 120GB). Using 4 different 30pins cables, connecting via the USB under the armrest or the USB on the console. iDrive is not communicating with any device.
However, If I connect my iPhone6 via lightning cable on either USB ports, it works fine. All three iPod works fine in my 2015 4Series. I dont want to use my iPhone as a media device. I want to use the 120GB iPod. Anyone have the same problem. Any suggestion on how to resolve this. Thanks |

I dont want to go the BT route, Charging is a problem an I am not sure if I can simultaneously connect a phone and music via BT. As for the Ipod touch. This might be the only solution. I will have to trim down my 90gb+ collection to 64GB. It's just a waste of a touchscreen since it will be used as a storage device. I really hope as more people are familiar with idrive5, someone can find a better solution. Thank you! =)

I just tried my old iPod in my 2016 340i and it doesn't work either. It says "Reading..." for a few seconds and then says "Not Supported". My wife has an Audi TT and had the same issue with her iPod, she ended up having to get a touch for it to work. I know the old iPods and the touch/phones use a different protocol for communication so maybe they've just discontinued the old one in newer cars?
Doesn't the BMW have a built in drive now? Could you maybe transfer your music to that instead of using an external iPod? Although that wont work for the older encrypted songs. |

FYI I just transferred all my iTunes music to the internal system of my car and it worked fine. I just copied the My Music folder from my iTunes directory to the USB stick that BMW gave me, plugged that into the car and selected "Import new music". It was really fast. Actually faster to transfer from the stick to the car then from my PC to the stick.
However I didn't have any encrypted songs. Back when they use to encrypt them I used a special program to decrypt them, so all of my music is unencrypted. Not sure if that program still exists now that they don't encrypt new purchases. |

One more thing... I asked my wife about her touch and she said she has issues with it. Apparently they're prone to overheating and when she gets in the car in the afternoon, after it's been sitting in the sun all day, sometimes the iPod doesn't work because it's too hot. So that's something to consider if you're planning on upgrading to a touch.

I just got my 2017 340 and having the same issues with my ipod. It's an older one, non flash drive, with tons of storage. How much memory does the drive in the car have? I have close to 60 gigs of music on ipod and don't know if the internal memory of the car will store all of it.
