Heated Steering Wheel Function Retrofit discussion and sharing

Hi, I am wondering if a F30 with a M-Sport steering Wheel without paddle nor heating function can retrofit the heating function if buying a steering wheel with heat function?

There are a lot of paddle retrofit discussions in the forum so i am just focusing on the heating function here.

By looking through the realoem for part number differences between the Steering wheel which has and does NOT have heating functions, it seems there are 3 major components needed to be added from a car without heating function.
Of course, you are going to purchase the steering wheel with heating function first, so you will get the heating wiring inside. Other than this, i found out 3 parts need to be added.

1. Control unit, steering wheel electronics (PN: 61319218379) <USD200.00
There are three PNs for the control unit, 61319218379 (support heat and all other functions), 61319218381 (don't support heat but support all other fucntions) and 61319218380 (only support heat but not other functions).

2. Steering wheel heating push button (PN: 61319201736) ~USD50.00

3. Trim panel, steering column, bottom (PN: 61319219551) ~USD50.00

PS. Switch unit steering column (This part is a bit tricky, but anyone with PN 61319351144, 61319351146, 61319351143 or 61319351141 will be fine as these PNs are compatible with the heated steering wheel already. Only the 61319351139, 61319351140 and 61319351142 don't support the heating function, but i doubt only very few ppl have their steering column with these PN).

Many people talked about the clock springs also need to be changed, but i could not find any part named clock springs. Is this part also the same or included in the Switch Unit Steering Column?

Above are my findings and hopefully it might be helpful for somebody.
I haven't done the actual retrofit yet as the control unit is quiet expensive and I am looking forward to have more people sharing their findings or experience.

Thanks for the info. I would like to do this as well but it's probably too pricey. I think those with earlier steering wheels will need an airbag upgrade as well.

hello

Before buying the next room (Switch unit steering column)

just use the unused connectors of the airbag:

+ slot 1 (red/Black)
- Slot 3 (brown)

must displacement connectors power and ground to the heated steering wheel

Hi Chazmink, I think you can always find the same look of the steering with the heating version, so you can transfer the airbag over.
Unless you are also upgrading for the looks, then it is a different story.

Hi David, what is your steering column's PN? Does it belong to PN i have listed above which doesn't support heating function? If so, this is quite some cost saving here as columns are very expensive. Any tricks for the control unit, too? If the cost can be lowered, i think many people would like to try.

By doing more studying, here is some good news. The most expensive part (apart from the steering wheel) in the heating steering wheel retrofit, Control unit, steering wheel electronics (PN: 61319218379), is actually inside the steering. So it should come with the steering wheel when you purchase it. Thus, the retrofit cost should be down to around USD100.00, which is more reasonable.

Any one has the wiring diagram available and can share? would like to check if there is any other wiring need to be added, thanks.

Hi i am stuck with removing the steering wheel column cover as I need to change the bottom part to have the heating switch. Haven't found a good reference of how to remove it, and got quite busy lately. But will start doing this project again as all the parts have been sitting there for quite awhile, and also my lumber support projects needs to kick off again, too.

Any one who know a good instruction of removing the steering column covers?

I finally got time to put the parts on and after coding as suggested by David51, everything works flawlessly. Now my hands are warm and happy!

PS. This is not likely to be just an $100 upgrade because just the steering wheel with heating function cost more than that. I wanted to upgraded my Steering Wheel to M3 one anyway, so the extra cost to have the heating function is minimal.

Hey guys, I am stuck at the above stage with my retrofit. Where did you get the red and yellow/white wires with white end connector (as photo) to put into the airbag connector to pick up the supply? My wheel heating control module has black wires and some how I need to link those to pins 1 & 3 of the airbag connector.

Many thanks.

Hi David51, really thank you very much for the reply. Mine is an F06 M6 Gran coupe.

That confuses me a little. I was thinking I needed to get the supply to the black 2 wire connector which is the supply input to the heater control module. (A83*4B). (Left side of photo below)

That is a black 4 pole (2 wired) connector that would go into the column connector A83*4B pins 1&4 if it was populated.

You show a red and yellow wire and a white connector? Also where can I get the female contacts to fit in the airbag connector?

Thanks David, appreciate it.

So the 2 pole socket will fit in the 3 pole pin terminal?
