RFT's... Utter, utter, utter rubbish!!!
PUNCTURE NUMBER FIVE since September 2012!!!!
Things to do, places to go on Saturday and now I have to call the dealership first thing in the vain hope they have one in stock, failing that it's a call round various tyre fitters. Double.. ...and gutted cos the last 3 punctures have all been the o/side front in about the last 5K. Then I'll have to renew my tyre insurance

My dear god in heaven. You are getting enough punctures for all of us. How can this be? How can one man be so goddammed unlucky? If I were you, I'd move house, sweep the roads before you use them, change jobs, get rid of the car, change religion or become religious again, give half your income to charity, employ a private detective to find out if you have enemies, or whether it is an inside job, etc, etc. I really feel for you. I feel sick, nay I am being sick. I need a stiff drink.

Ugh that really sucks.. but just so I'm understanding, when you say RFTs are rubbish, are you implying that you wouldn't have suffered these punctures had they been non-RFs, or is that simply a reference to them not being usable when punctured as designed? My F31 order will be my first car with RFTs and wondering whether they are more prone to punctures (and if so, why?)

That one is definantly repairable. My local garage does them for seven to nine quid. If you can make it to nw Surrey, they probably have them in stock. Non chain garage who are great value.

Jesus, and I thought I was puncture prone!! Can't even remember how many my E90 LCI 330d had!! AMAZINGLY, my 328i has had none! 28k miles now too - feeling VERY lucky.

I dont think you can blame run flats for punctures?
You'd had the same puncture if it had been a non run flat, surely? All run flats do is to allow the car to be driven at a restricted speed with a puncture - I dont think they attract more punctures! |

Well in 30+ years of motoring I've probably had maybe two or three punctures up to 2010... then I got an E81, my first ever car with RFTs. Two punctures in a year and a half. Now the F30 and it's 5 punctures in 10 months.
We're driving the same routes in other cars all of which have non-RFTs and none of which have had punctures. I know it's not logical but I have to wonder why the RFTs are picking up so many punctures? Did wonder about a repair, Discount Tyres in Worthing are pretty good and will repair RFTs if they think it's safe, but I did wonder if the nail is too near the side wall? Failing that, the car's staying at home all weekend and I'm pinching the Mr's convertible Oh and I give loads to the RNLI and we get on fine with all our neighbours but I'm all in favour of a religion that stops me getting punctures!

Subject to the running-on-flat issues being satisfied, to me does look borderline for a repair. Must be in the mid 159mm section on a 225 section tyre and the object's angle of penetration could push it past the BS standard limit.
Anecdotal evidence seems to be emerging that RFTs puncture more easily than regular tyres. It is suggested it may be to do with the stiffer side walls not deflecting objects as easily. HighlandPete |

HighlandPete is definitevely correct, RF tyres are so hard they are like a magnet to anything hard and sharp! Had to change 1 a year on average since 2008 e92. Before that I had only 1 puncture in 10 years. BMW must have share in tyres for sure . In the name of Safety and convenience...

Ok local KwikFit have declined a repair saying it's too near the edge. My dealer has got a new one on order so the car is staying put until Monday

ouch, that's slightly depressing.. guess I best make sure I take up some tyre insurance when the F31 arrives (sods law that means I will be puncture-free for the duration of the lease but meh, I'd rather err on the side of caution)

Well, just like bringing an umbrella is the best way to ensure good weather... I guess insurance is the best way to prevent a puncture.

That is unfortunate. When I got my 1 series I got 2 punctures in 4000 miles, 1 got repaired then the other was right on the edge. After that, no more punctures. I think that I was pucking punctures up from a friends house - there neighbour was having some work done and I had a look around outside and there was screws snd nails every where.

You should attach two strong electromagnets to the bottom edges of your front bumper to pickup nails b4 they reach your tires.
And BTW, it can be repaired but I also understand the shop declining. On my E90 I had 2 tires that got nails very close to sidewall. I had both repaired with patched from inside. Reason why tire shops don't like patching near sidewall is because of the sidewall flex typically would cause the patch to fail (and because tire OEMs specifically recommend against it). RFTs flex so little the patch can survive as my 2 did. One of them for over 7K miles. What tires are on your car?

I've had RFTs on both my E90 and my F30. Drove 45k in the E90 with two punctures, 11k so far in the F30 with 1 puncture. All 3 punctures near the sidewall so unable to be repaired. Frequency of punctures for me is very similar to before I started using RFTs. For info 225/45/17 on the E90, 205/60/16 on the F30, always on premium brands.

Since we're being anecdotal I had way more punctures in my old peugeot 307 non rfts than I had with my bmws. However, the frustration is the limitation of repair. tbh I never knew we could get them repaired at all, sucking up the party line etc. But now I have tyre insurance on my f30 so no worries there - it's the E61 that I'll look into for repairs if I get a puncture...

The rear X6 went down and Kwik Fit repaired ok.
