Question How low have you been with fuel left - Range in miles?

The manual says not to go under 30 miles (as a precaution) but I've been down to 5 miles. Anyone been lower?

Went to 0 on me! I knew I was a few miles from home and range showed I had enough but then dropped from 8 miles range to 0 in my last 2 miles... Was a bit concerned to say the least, but then actually got no more than 54 litres in... So must be a decent reserve in hand.

Very careful driving. Was no miles to go read out just fuel gauge, was a very long drive to Elgin lol.

Btw that's north Scotland.

3 litres sounds about reserve size doesn't it! 57 litre tanks in the diesels, 60 in the petrols.

As an aside, anybody know why this is the case?

Maybe the crud at the bottom of the tank would be used when < 0 miles on range, I would have thought... not good for the engine?

I've been 12 miles on zero... Eco mode was on then I can tell you! The problem was that the range of 70 miles initially offered on first warning reduced far quicker than the miles I was driving.

I always wish i got he same mileage from the second half of a tank as I did from the first half. Same for every car I've ever owned that, though.

Not in my F30 but in the F20 I have had to make a few emergency searches for fuelling ... done about 10 miles when it was at 0 Range before was shitting myself the fill time but finally found a garage to fill up in... I am actually quite bad for this.

I used to fill my tank up full and when it got to half a tank fill back up full but got told this is not economical due the extra weight and for fuel efficiency its better to never fill up more thank half way. lol

I didn't know you _could_ keep driving at Range 0 miles for x miles! Because when the "Fuel Reserve" message comes on (about 66 miles Range?) I thought you ARE using your reserve, once it hits Range 0 (OK it's an estimate) miles that's it - car stops!

! "If the remaining operating range is below 50 km (30 miles), it is imperative to add fuel, otherwise the engine's functions are not assured and damage may occur."

You are all very brave! I'd only do that if I was driving in circles on the petrol station forecourt or had few litres in the fuel can. I wanted V-Power and so bypassed a non Shell fuel station but was sweating!

The only reason I did it was cos some muppet wouldn't let me in so I missed the Shell garage (had 8 miles range) the next station is about 4 miles up the road and it just dropped to 0.

Wouldn't normally risk it, ran out once in a Mini and it was never the same afterwards

Try travelling to North Scotland on a Sunday when things shut at 7 pm lol.

It's ok in Middle Britain or near a city but A9 and further up do not have many petrol stations.

It just takes one to be closed or out of fuel, then you realise it will be a nervous 80 miles to next one.... Will it be open .... Etc lol

I guess it's a system that ensures that diesels don't need bleeding even if you run out... Perhaps it keeps the fuel lines primed even though the tank is empty, which explains the difference?

Pure guess. Would like to know, too.
