Same power, less gas. I'd go for it. Article says they're keeping the 6-cyl still as an option. Don't forget cars 20 years ago were typically 8-cylinders. Doesn't mean they were faster - just means they were big boats and they ended up eating gas faster.

The article just says BMW is expanding its line to offer more variety. That's a good thing. Sure some people will be driving cheap ones, but we have the 323's here in Canada and most people still go for the 328's.

Hopefully BMW expands their upper end vehicles (i.e. M10 supercar?).
4-cylinder engine making 300hp is no big news. The Mitsubishi Evo's had that for a while. Problem is that the engine is not smooth and refined at all like the N54. The fuel economy isn't that impressive either: 17/22 mpg while the 335xi can get 17/26 mpg (both have about the same hp).

As far as repairs, a mechanic charges per hour what he charges and bmw still gives 4/50k free maintenance. so for 4 yrs u know ur taken care of. What you choose to do after that is up to you.

The rendering cars interior looks great to me. The exterior is not as attractive but BMWs 3 series has never been one to disappoint. For the last 20 yrs they've been on top of their game. My faith is with them being the leader in their class once again.

You're 100% right. I shouldn't be so critical about it. It's just that when I shop for a used 2012 3-series coupe in the year 2015, I don't want one that has the Drive Select option. I keep my cars for a long time, and I'm afraid fixing an automatically dampening suspension is going to be very costly. I'm not sure if I can even replace with coil overs.

The 2012 3 Series sedan will not be introduced to North America until the fall of 2011, more than two years away. So, I would not put too much faith in the accuracy of any renderings such as the one shown by Car & Driver. At this point, these kinds of drawings are purely speculative.

keep in mind the amount of BMW models / versions that don't come here.
The 5 GT looks like a Dodge Omni humped an Aztek. fugly.

as long as it has 3 pedals, I'm happy. My next BMW will probably be a 1 or an X5, unless the new slab front style starts to grow on me...

I have yet to read about any Forced Induction 4 cylinder which keeps 4 cylinder(NA) efficiency while making 6 cyl HP. It just can't happen unless you drop the weight, and BMW would be hard pressed to drop the weight.

Can't agree with you more. Having driven the DCT M3 this weekend ,I can see it would be a tremendous option for those who track or race their cars as well as those that prefer automatic transmission. Manual transmission lovers will find it less desirable. As for the extra power, a simple chip will get you that as long as you can keep the dealership from finding out and voiding your warranty.

I'll have to take a wait and see attitude.

I did hear that the M3 will be twin turbo six. So, that sounds good to me, depending on price.

Hatchbacks are great and I'm anxious to see what this looks like. My previous car was a Saab 900S, a hatchback, and it was amazing the way it could swallow cargo when needed - an incredibly versatile car. I had four six foot cedars in the hatch once. In contrast, the trunk of my 328i is overflowing with a couple of suitcases. If the styling is done well, then I will put my money down for a hatchback - far better than a portly and cumbersome SUV.

I'm hoping to be able to switch to a 2500 lbs Z2 M with the 275 hp turbo 4. The 3 series is hard to reconcile Euro (read: efficient diesel) demands with USA (read: fat luxury hog) market.

Regardless, I am content to keep my 335 for a long time if need be...

screw gas mileage. ill pay the extra 10 or 20 bucks a month. if you cant afford that then why are you in a bmw. let honda and toyota do the hybrids and high gas mileage cars. bmw should keep doing what there doing. there are enough people out there who actually like to drive to keep bmw in business no problem.

no way there gonna get good mpg out of a turbo 4 banger and still have a fast car. unless like stressdoc said it weighs 2500 lbs. i dont see that ever happening in a 3-series. another 3 or 4 mpg is worthless.

Yeah, but let's hope that while they are renewing the 3, they don't also increase the weight by a couple of hundred pounds. The new 5er is longer and heavier, as are most "new" models by other manufacturers. The on-going race for "size" seems baffling when all manufacturers are under the gun to improve mpg. I would love to see BMW hold the line on "growing" the 3er.

I hear ya. These threads are always kind of fun and interesting to spark discussions. I am all for it. BUT, it just seems that whenever BMW launches a new 3 series, a lot of us start to criticize and hate on its appearance before even seeing in person.

Believe or not, there were haters when the e46s came out (now consider by most car enthusiasts to be of iconic status in terms of looks and overall performance). And not too long ago, we all know there were definitely haters of the e90s when they came out. Yet now, many fanatics view the e90s as looking as good as or even better than the e92s.

So, take a look at these drawings/pictures will a grain of salt. Based on past history, many of you will come to like the new 3 series. That's for sure!

Car & Driver is full of shit, as always. They don't have any kind of inside knowledge about the next gen 3-series; they are are just guessing what it might be like based on current trends and what not. Apparently, they don't even know that BMW has a 7-year product life cycle and that the next 3-series is due in MY2013, not MY2012. And as for the top of the line 3-series being a turbo 4, that ain't gonna happen.

It seems imho like they've priced themselves out of the reach of the avg. Joe. 52k for an E92 335 w/o iDrive, 60k for a X5, 100k+ for a 7. Then you have the cost of maintenance, cost of extended warranty, and unreliability factor. Good thing we're all rich here.....LOL

All kidding aside it was strange to see the price go up, and the standard equipment go down, with the E92.

They're pretty poor writers, too.

An inline 4 is just like a V6, lacking in secondary balance. It would be quite odd for BMW to start using 4's or V6's imho....

Not really; most cars were 4 cylinders in 1989.

mbz did same thing by splitting hairs on options and start charging for each split strand taking there bread butter cars in hefty ranges, thus people got repulsed and not buy! I can see bmw going through same route and scheme, of excessive greed a la also like sony, asking more for less or redundant/recessive technolgy.
