Holy Mackerel...our entire car has been recalled!
This is so unbelievable and I have never heard of this happening before: we have been informed by our BMW service manager that our entire car has been recalled and will be replaced. We really like the car and are in shock!
Apparently when a number of vehicles (our VIN was one of 5 in our region) were delivered to Halifax they were exposed/doused in sea water during the unloading process. Our car was identified as affected as they had the VINs of the cars that were in the affected area on the ship/dock. We are on holiday and I have been instructed to bring our car to the dealer when we return. We will be provided with a loaner until our replacement car arrives. The service manager said that he has never heard of BMW doing this and that he thought it was remarkable that the company was stepping up with this response. |

Wow! Really? How long did you have the car?

That's awesome customer service, even though you haven't felt any ill effects... yet.
Seawater will eventually corrode some systems and parts, should build over time. Plus, if water got up the air intake, that means it got into the engine. Long/short - your car is totaled and will either be scrapped, or used for research on the effects. Following Hurricane Katrina, there were a ton of watered BMWs on the used market. Poor suckers never fully comprehended why their cars were so messed up. By the way, tough to see water submersible effects in the interior; carpet can be replaced. You need to get down on the ground with a flashlight or put it on a lift and check the undercarriage. I bet you see premature rust. Also the Pistons likely have some build up in excess.

Wow. Good on them. Sea water could either have no effect for many years or completely bork your engine before 5k miles. Glad they stepped up!

Saw this on the news a few weeks ago. Seems to be related to the cars that were stuck for several weeks at the port due to winter storms.

I'm not sure what to look for...electrical seems fine though there have been a few glitches (trunk not opening fully when first switched open)...not sure how to assess the potential for corrosion damage to fuel/brake/AC lines, body, engine, etc.

I come originally from an Island with salt water surrounded and I can tell you from experience, that cars who are not proper surface protected and/or had already some spots into the surface, the salt water is very agressive, even its only the moisture waving around the island. The closer to coast, the heavier are the damage. But you have to see this on a long term, before its obviously, that something has damaged you car. Anyway, with intensive contact of salty water or just steady spray with it, the cornerstone for any damage is laid.

Humm...
Time to address order mistakes, nice-to-have you didn't take on 1st run, engine or drivetrain regrets... //M ! Sad for you if your car was exactly the way you wanted it, but on the other hand, another brand new car for you. Maybe the next one could be an ED (since you have a loaner during that time)... Ohhhh, sooo much ideas !

kudos to BMW for doing the right thing though. I would ask for some icing on this cake though... it's "quite an inconvenience"

Don't want the ZHP...lowers the ride height and we travel in country areas where that is not a good idea. I feel so inconvenienced and emotionally damaged that I will need to watch something like Armageddon with many cars destroyed by asteroids the size of Volkswagens...while drinking some Grand Marnier Louis Alexandre!
