Gear Change and HUD

With stick left and using the paddles for gear change I am sometimes not sure which gear I'm in as the system doesn't always do as I request. While the current gear is shown on the instrument panel it would be far better if it was shown on the HUD to save looking down.
Or am I just showing my advanced age???

It would be nice, I believe the M cars do it.

They do. The M4 I drove had a really useful rev counter and gear indicator in the HUD, when one of the M buttons was pressed. I would have thought petrol cars with HUD might have displayed the gear.

No you're absolutely right! A huge gripe I have with the HUD is the fact it shows a mere fraction of the information it could and should show.

I've always wished my car had HUD but the main reason was to see the rev counter and selected gear. I just assumed it would have this - these being the most important things to show. Glad I saved £500 now!

I would say your speed and where to go are more important!

I posted a while ago that it would be a really simple update for iDrive to show a huge gear indicator. Off to the side I guess but no HUD needed etc.

Why do you need the gear and revs shown in the HUD? Would feel like a gimmick

Not being funny but surely together with the view of the road ahead, you can hear and feel whether or not you need to be doing something, regardless of what the gear number happens to be? If the car won't do what you want, such as change up at too high revs or change down at too low revs, then it's because the car knows there's no benefit such as more acceleration or engine braking?

I can feel I'm gonna get a right slaggin' for this

Yep, rev counter and gear display would be ideal

Would be nice but in 80% of my driving I wouldn't care. Only really useful for when pushing on or on track.....

Not a slagging, but different strokes for different folks. I can only see the benefit in manual mode but then, not being a gifted driver, or even having decent hearing, I nevertheless process information like rev count and gear selection quite readily and the data helps me select shift points. In auto mode, no value to the data at all. The car knows better than me.

I agree, if you have a sound understanding of engine, gear, speed and how the engine sounds and how it is delivering the power, what gear and revs is kind of irrelevant.
Using the HUD when pressing on just needs the basic details that we have at the moment. To much would be a distraction.
We can stand next to each other at the public hanging.

Sadly not, the M HUD requires the M Kombi and possibly a different FEM too (can't recall for certain).
