Ditching the run flats - Finally

I've got 32k miles on my runcraps and its time to put proper tires on the car. I should have done it sooner but I'm a cheapskate and the RFT Continentals were not horrible when compared to the first gen run flats.

Anyway, I'm thinking about the Continental ExtremeContact DW summer or the G-FORCE COMP-2 A/S Ultra High Performance all seasons.

I researched the archives and I'm just looking for feedback from those who have experience with these two tires or any other suggestions.

Thanks.

Good choice! By far one of my best upgrades for my car, getting rid of the runflats. I put on some Hankook Ventus V12s. You can spend more and surely get better performing tires but for daily driving, these suit me just fine.

I run the G-Force Comp 2s on wife's benz. They are 'ok'. They can be a noisy on the road...not near as bad as RFTs, but they're aren't super quiet either. I'm running 245/xx/17s on her car in them. They grip well etc and have a nice tread pattern but I'll probably ditch them to Michelins next go round.......

Out of curiosity, are you going to purchase an aftermarket spare tire kit since you are ditching the run flats, or are you just going to buy one of those fix-a-tire-with-a-can type deals? Believe me, I have thought about ditching the run-flats as well, but since these cars have no spares, it leaves me a bit worried in case something happens.

Good choice. I replaced mine with Conti DWS and I'm very happy.

I'd like to know this as well. I've seen the temp spare kits - just under $500 - that sit on top of the luggage area, which means nothing else goes in the trunk.

I've priced the "BMW Mobility Kit" on EBay and that seems more reasonable. Of course those kits only fix pictures in the tread if you cut the sidewall you're out of luck.

So what do you use? And have you had to use it for a flat?

I'm going with fix a tire.

I may buy a doughnut spare for when I'm traveling in remote places where there are no services just in case.

For what it's worth I will be puting the ExtremeContact DW Summer's on mine after.

They have good tread wear and wet traction. I never drive in freezing conditions. They are not the best performance but they are way more than enough for DAily driving. Price/tread wear seems to be a great value especially when shopping for 19's like I have.

RFTs rule--Germany makes cars with them because it is utterly foolish (and illegal on the autobahn) to stop to change a tire.

BMW NA likes runflats on their cars because BMW buyers don't want to be bothered by changing a flat. They would rather drive to a shop and pay full boat to replace the tire.

Runflats most definitely do not rule. I can't remember the last time I got a full on flat. If I even get a puncture, the tpms tells me and I address it well before I would need to put on a spare. The compromise to the ride and handling 100% of the time is not worth the convenience to me perhaps .01% of the time.

I'll be buying tires soon too and I won't be getting the RFT. Here's the thread I started regarding my choices/considerations in case you haven't had a chance to read it:

For something more constructive, I had Conti DW on my 550i and I liked them. Plenty of grip unless you are doing lots of spirited driving on twisty roads, or very heavy into exit ramps. Quiet, comfortable and predictable control. Not the most aggressive tire you can get, but they certainly fit the bill for me. I'll be getting DWS next time, as you get more life out of them, and I don't need the extra grip of the summer only.

RFTs rule on 'convenience'...but the noise factor is utterly ridiculous on grooved/uneven paved roads. The Pirelli P-zeroes on my car roar on some pavement heading towards Santa Barbara and still are not quiet on the freeways of L.A. during the rare occasions you can use the gas pedal). I can't wait to ditch them. Might be interesting to build a false bottom to cover a temp spare and still have usable space in the back. I'll be a sound shop could do it if it doesn't exceed the height of the liftgate/trunk edge

As much as i detest the runflats it saved me one time when i finished work late one day. I start the car and get the low air pressure message and when i go out to look at it, it was definitely busted. I mustve hit a pothole, the sidewall blee and my rim was bent. I went to gas station with 1 hour left till closing only for them to tell me they didnt hae any tires my size. Without the rubflats i wouldve had to either tow my car or leave it there and take 2 or 3 hour public transportation ride home. I just took it noce and slow and drove home the 20 miles on my flat run flats. Now i dont mind them as much seeing as how convenient it was to be able to get home at least and then take it to the mechanic a block away the next morning. Wouldnt have been able to do that if i had regulat tires without a spare in the trunk. Fix a flat wouldnt have worked either because it was a busted sidewall

BTW, you can find the Continental Comfort Kit for less the the BMW mobility kit. I just ordered one off ebay and I will let you guys know how it looks when it arrives. Or for the least expensive route, a basic emergency compressor off amazon is like $20 and a can of fix-a-flat won't set you back too much. Chances are you not going to use it anyway.

Yep, a blowout is the one time runflats are useful. I have never had one, but they do happen. I'll just keep rolling the dice. If I had super long commute, or traveled far from home regularly, I might think differently. In that case I'd get a space saver spare.

Both are excellent choices. I had ExtremeContact DW on my e46 330i. They were great in the dry and handled Seattle wet roads well. I think I got 29k out of them (staggered, rear went first). I replaced them with A/S 3 and ran it this winter. No complaints. I think they were equal in terms of noise or at least not enough for me to notice.

Question: Was the sidewall busted because it was a runflat?

Yeah, I'm going to ditch them as well, but since I'm going for the Continental DWS 06 All Seasons, will wait until fall.
