Thinking about a new engine.
So I have 110k miles on my F30 N55 M pack. I obviously want this car to last forever but that would be nothing more than a fairytale. So I was thinking about buying a used low mile engine and keeping her alive longer and I figured it would run me 10k. Just came here for some input and suggestions.

110k isn't that much. Anything wrong with the current engine? Maybe trade her in as down payment towards a lower mileage car. I've seen examples on here with higher miles still going strong. If it's still going I say keep driving till the wheels fall off then maybe do an engine swap but not with a brand new motor.

Is the water pump dying or you are just being proactive? I'm assuming that "on standby" means you already have one on hand. Also, you can get some parts from FCP Euro so those carry lifetime warranty free replacement less shipping. A good remanufactured engine should be as good as new and at a fraction of the cost if you want to go that route but I would do that only if the current engine is completely toast which isn't the case.

Being proactive is more like doing oil changes and spark plugs per factory recommended intervals or maybe slightly more frequently particularly with oil changes. Getting a new engine or water pump may be a little on the extreme side if there isn't a problem and yes more costly.

If you need a second motor buy one from eBay 2500 to 5k used and have it machined then rebuild it with Steel liners,Carrillo rods and CP pistons if your mind is on performance. If not there are so many better things I can think of to do with 10k other than taking out a perfectly good motor and spending 10k on a brand new stock one. Go invest or get some real estate or something in Fla or Texas ,flip or rental. Cmon!

Could just be an issue with the tune as you mentioned it had one. Not any physical damage to the engine as it's running fine now. Are you running E85? As mentioned you could run steel lines and other fuel system upgrades to make it more E85 friendly. If it's still running at 185K miles you could remove the heads and take a look at the valves and pistons if they still look good no need to do an engine swap. I'm not sure how many cars have gone past 200K on the original motor but I've seen some cars on youtube with super high mileage where the engine still looks new, they weren't BMWs though but something more basic like a newer hyundai with an NA motor.

You're always going to have to rebuild at some point. I'd just put some money away in a slowly growing account, then only tap into it when it's rebuild time.

At that mileage, there are so many other things that will wear out, not necessarily engine related, that I could easily become a money pit, for a car that is never going to regain any value.
If the yearly maintenance costs start to exceed what a newer car's payments would be, it's probably be best to look at upgrading. I love my car, so I kind of get it, but there are plenty of aspirational cars that are better than a pre-LCI F30 in any number of metrics. When the time comes, I'll get something new to experience while either selling my F30 or keeping it as a beater.

I would sell and get something else a little newer with 10k down if that’s what you want. Or lease with some of that cash down.
Here you go Www.Swapalease.com Now go get yourself an F80 M3 or F30 340 where someone wants to give up their lease.
