Possible to temporarily disable ABS ?
Anybody know if it's possible to temporarily disable the ABS-feature, without pulling any fuses or wires?
Can't find a way on my F30, but it was possible on my old E91, by pressing the Start/stop for 3 seconds, or hitting it fast 3 times. (It also disabled some other stuff, but it did the trick) Doesn't seem to have the same effect on F30. (FYI, it's for track purposes only, to teach students the difference between ABS on/off, as I'm a driving instructor) |

What a great driving instructor! And car to learn in! Huh, didn't know that trick on the E9X models! What else would it deactivate? And would you press and hold the Start/Stop button for 3 seconds with your foot on the clutch (or brake for auto) when you start it up? Or do you start it and then hold it? I just like to know these things

In most other cars i owned you can take the fuse out for the abs to disable it. Not sure whether you can do the same with the f30. Try look into the fuse box to see if there is a fuse for the abs.

I highly doubt that you'll be able to disable it especially with all these safety rules nowadays... I could be completely wrong, I'm no expert.

I see, that's what I had imagined.. shame, but understandable from BMW's point of view.
Quote:
When the students attend safety course on track (slippery), I would instruct them to brake hard, then steer into the other lane. And they do, usually with success, depending on how slippery it is, and how much they steer. Then, I would instruct them to do the same, but just before they're supposed to steer into the other lane, I would press and hold the Start/stop-button for some seconds, making it impossible to steer into the other lane, as the ABS is disabled, unless of course the students have figured out that they can release the brake, and be able to steer. (Hint: 1 out of 200 figures this out, 17-20 year old students) That's what I did on my E90, but it doesn't work on F30.. On E90 it shuts the engine down, disabled the ABS, and possibly also the servo, not quite sure.. On F30, the engine shuts down, but most safety features seems to still be enabled, so the students don't get the "what the hell, I can't steer" feeling.. Pulling a fuse would be too much hassle, I'm just a lazy instructor after all.. |

^^ Not a hassle as such, but not really worth taking the time out to do, when students pay hella kroners for the safety course on track, and when it's not really necessary to show off, nor part of the official subject curriculum.. just a little neat trick I like to show off.

At driver training they just wired a switch in there. If you have any wiring savvy, I'd just grab an old fuse and break it open, solder some leads to each end and run a switch in series with a fuse and have it dangle down near the OBD2 port. It won't be a permanent thing, so doesn't need to be clean or anything.

Spin the car. On my E36, ABS would be disabled after a spin. Let us know if it works for the F30. Joel
