428 Lease End Issue - Powdercoated Wheels

I took my 428 in for lease end inspection (lease up in june) in hopes of swapping for a new m4 only to find out that you CANNOT return your car with black powder coated wheels. I ended up getting charged $400/wheel. I was left with two options: pay the $1600 or take the car or repaint or powdercoat to original color which should look like below. Im thinking of finding a place to paint of the powder coat back to the original color. Does anyone have any other ideas? will bmw inspector notice that i painted over the powder coat? does anyone know the original color to match the wheel?

Damn I wish you were closer. I would but those from you. Do they have to be the same exact wheels when you turn the lease in, or can they be other oem non painted BMW wheels?

With all due respect, you can have the wheels stripped, repaired and repainted for around $225 each....cheaper in Southern California if some of the Forum Vendors can be trusted.

I would strongly suggest you don't powder coat back to the original color. They have every right to refuse it if they even find it to be ever so slightly different from OEM color. You might end up paying for power-coating and then still get denied by BMW. Don't dig this hole deeper.

The 400 they are charging you per rim...what is it for? Are they replacing the rim for that price? Are they powder coating it? This would be my deciding factor. If they are replacing the rim, then good, you can fork over the 1600 and you can keep your rims to sell them. If they are powdercoating them, then that's a different story.

If they are 397s, they should be able to be purchased online for $200-300 each..a lot cheaper. I don't think I'd try and have them stripped and redone if they're powdercoated-too much work and no guarantee of a positive outcome. Like another posted, see if someone will swap with you as the 397 is pretty common (I have them, but no, I don't want black powdercoat).

Good luck!

$240 ea-no cap or sensors though. It's Ferric Gray.

best bet is to trade with someone. Better question is why would you ever think it would be OK to powdercoat the stock wheels on a lease.

a straight trade would be ideal
but you probably don't have enough time to wait for that to happen

ask if the dealer will accept the car with a set of any stock wheels and tires that come with the 4 series
if so, just buy a set off the forum or craigslist for cheap

Too bad you're not on the East coast. I would trade you and then have 3 years to figure out what to do with them!

We've all paid more than $1600 in "stupid tax" in our lives. Sucks to learn the hard way but I'm guessing this won't be a problem next time.

What i was told is that they wouldnt mind it if the job was done properly. Are you sure they said they wont accept the powder coated wheels?

Which is better than a 3 year old and tired looking original finish set. It's just paint.

Course they are; I was agreeing with your post...all cheaper options than paying $1600 for a new set.

You advise not to refinish, but you suggest buying refinished.

Furthermore, no idea what conditions these previously damaged rim were in.

Cheaper, easier and safer to have your own refinished.

good points. Any refurbished wheel would be flawless or they wouldn't stay in business very long. The only question would be the 'match' to the OEM.

Swapping with someone is probably the best way to ensure the color is accurate.

I'd buy a refinished wheel now that we've discussed it to death. I purchased one online for My Benz..it was perfect.

why would you think you can do that to the wheels and have it not be an issue on lease return? can you find used on eBay?
