Car keyed, touchup acceptable for lease return?
Hey all, some @sshole keyed both my passenger doors yesterday and I have 12 months left on the lease. I know the correct repair is repaint/blend both doors but wondering if anyone has simply touched it up with a paint pen and got dinged on the lease return? I've love to fix all the minor issues with the car but financially constrained at the moment and would not like to file a comprehensive claim either.

Find someone that does paint repair for a dealership. I have a buddy that corrects this kind of thing independently, he also actually works at the Bimmer dealership locally. He can fix this kind of thing without repainting the whole side of the car. Less expensive too.

They will notice the paint pen, if they don't you won the lottery.
I'm cringing looking at that, best to do the insurance claim, as it would probably cost you more on the lease turn-in. |

Sorry about this. This is why I'm so skeptical when I park. And I always think, it's just a 3 series, why is there hate for it. Can't imagine how paranoid someone can be with higher end cars.
Anyway, take it to a few shops if you can and get quotes. Take the quotes to one shop to another so you can get the best price. Love your EB |

There is no way touch-up paint can help that. With a scratch that long, I don't think anything less than a respray and blend will work.
Sorry that happened!

Worth getting it looked at by a decent paint shop.
Its a long scratch but may be able to do something short of a full repaint. Very annoying...ugh. Be hard to do with touchup...not impossible but very very difficult due to the thickness of the touchup paint. Will obviously obviate the big silvery - gray scratch but will almost certainly note the line of blue paint on inspection. Could always try and worst case if they ding you on pre-return inspection get if fixed before you actually return the car. |

Man looking at this really sucks. This is one of the reasons why I park far away and isolated. I don't mind doing the extra walking.
OP, where are you located - I may have somebody in Brooklyn that could hook you up. |

I just make sure I park near a camera. Also I have a camera running inside my car 24 hours which deters scumbags as well.

I'm thinking of quad cams (one aimed at each direction), but that might be too much power-sapping when the car is off. Signs on the windows saying that the car is under 24hr surveillance are good too, but people may not see them if they're in a rush to fuck your car up. |

Do you have a sign on your car that says 24 hour surveillance? Not sure how an inside camera would stop crime, but I DO see how it would possibly capture an incident.

Dang, that sucks. I would start contacting some local repair guys in your area to kind of see what price range you're going to have to be looking at or working with.

When you talk to the body shop tell them you want it "lease fixed" and see how that quote differs from full-on perfect repair. You may luck and have it look good enough for your purposes.

Thanks for all your thoughts and feedback! The body shop across the street from my office agreed to paint both doors for $500 so I've decided to give them a shot and hopefully it comes out acceptable to return the lease.

I have a hotspot inside my car constantly running as well which whenever the camera detect any unusual activity which is generally hear the door open and a shock from impact or perhaps toll it clips a picture and send it to my email. Only flaw to my whole setup is I have to remember to recharge the hotspot every few days.
