Not what I wanted to see zooming down the highway..run flat warning

I got a bit worried, and slowed down. Hoped that the run flats would see me to the nearest gas station. It wasn't a puncture, and to date I don't know why those warning lights activated.

When I went to the gas station to put air in the tires they were actually a bit over pressured according to the tire pressure chart on the inside of the driver's door.

Alls well that ends well , though. Has this happened to anyone else?

happened to me. found a nail in it. you can keep driving at normal speeds. i went to a dealer and they just put air in it and said you are fine, just get it fixed.

Quite usual with false pressure alarms. I just reset and drive on. Happens to my 520d too.

If a wheel slips a bit it can easily happen or a change in load making one wheel smaller.

Running with winter tires when it is warm outside can make the traction control react and make that a pressure loss alarm. It is a bit too sensitive.

??? From what I have been reading, if you actually run, on a run-flat tire you destroy it and it must be replaced. However, if you get it fixed immediately by someone that knows what they are doing, then it is okay.

Or, did you get away with it because your tire was just low, and not flat?

Run-flats are notoriously difficult to repair, I hate them.

Not sure what you have been reading but it was understood to me that you could go up to 50 miles at 50mph on a runflat. I have gone 7 days on a runflat not knowing a nail was in it. I just kept filling it with air every two days. But with rim&tire insurance they just replace the whole tire for free anyway. So, I guess I'll never know if the tire was "destroyed" or not. Judging from how it handled, I'd say it was just fine. And that was after about 200 miles of city driving. I have gone through four tires and never took them in immediately. Run flats are pretty resilient. If they weren't they wouldm't be called runflats I guess.

I wonder why they are so difficult to repair? The sidewall is different than a non-run-flat, but isn't the tread the same?

I have read that the sidewall on a run-flat is not repairable at all, and that kinda make sense. I don't know why the tread would be an issue, though.

Could it just be a liability issue -- the tire shop not wanting to be responsible if the sidewall's integrity is compromised, but not noticed?

Yes, but if the tire is actually flat, and you go 50 miles on it, the sidewall's integrity is compromised and the tire becomes unrepairable.

They will be - tyres are rated for pressure when "cold" ie the car hasn't been used for a few hours. If you check your tyres after driving for more than a few minutes the heat will cause the air in them to expand resulting in a higher pressure reading. If you let some air out based on that they may now be under-inflated.

Often less than this.

There is nothing special or difficult about repairing run-flat tires. As with real tires, no one should try to repair a leak in the sidewall. There is no issue repairing within the tread.

Just be certain to use BMW approved air.

I don't think I'll ever be able to ignore the warning though. How would you know, inside the car, whether it is an actual pressure loss due to something puncturing the tire or just a false alarm?

The purpose of an RFT is to provide a structure that can work at relatively low speeds with low or no pressure. However this process is destructive. So if you drive at all on an RFT with low pressure (sub 20 psi) you will compromise the tire and it should be immediately replaced.

You would not know.

Pull over, check the pressure in the tire. If OK, reset the monitoring system. Easy.

Is the warning supposed to tell which tire has a problem ? i see 4 markers for the 4 tires, if so it would be quite indicative that the system just misfired.

I'm guessing that the original post is about a warning under FTM, which is a different system entirely than the TPMS used in US market cars, and more susceptible to false alarms. TPMS actually monitors pressure, while FTM works on rotation speed.

I actually don't know how it's supposed to work. The marks by each tyre implies that it should identify the problem tyre, but I'm not sure.

it only shows which tire is actually low by marking it yellow, the rest should be green. if all 4 are yellow, then something isn't reading right.

I haven't noticed it in the BMW yet, but my 2007 Miata almost always throws a pressure warning when we have a cool snap.
