How to Remove Shark Fin Antenna?

The shop that I'm talking to to wrap my roof said that if I want them to wrap the antenna also, that I need to remove it first.

So is it just double stick tape like 3m?

Maybe I should just have it painted. But in the mean time, does anyone know?

The ones on the E90 are not taped, ther ar plastic pins attached to the fin wich grab into the roof.

I think its the same with the F30, so its just try to pull straight up

So, how did it go?

I was kinda thinking you should remove the interior roof trim panel and see if there's any screws there. Hope not!

Not good, lol... I went at it with some decent force. Tryed sliding it back and also pulling pretty hard but I don't want to break anything. At this point, I don't think its stuck with 3m tape but who knows. Ugh

I'd be VERY careful with that plastic pry tool. A little too much downward pressure and you've got a roof impression.

Get yourself a good blow dryer and be patient. You may want a real heat gun, but NEVER place close to the car (or hold in one place), you'll melt parts.

Let us know.

be sure to get a new double stick tape seal from the dealer. Clean the antenna and car with denatured alcohol before applying tape.

I once had to buy a new one for my E90 and i could just click it in with the plastic pins in the roof. No screws or tape involved

Very interesting. I may just call the shop again and go talk to them and see if they can just do it with the fin on. They said that for it to be a really clean install, it needs to be removed though.

The shark fin is held into your roof with a type of adhesive very similar to urethane glue. You need to cut it out very carefully not to a scratch anything. The fin is plastic and under it is the actual antenna which is screwed on with a single screw. I think it's a T27 or T25. We have done a few of these and it requires patients and I recommend it should be don't by professionals.

I'll make a video next time we do a roof and post it up.

Thanks I appreciate the info! I've been pretty busy so the wrap and a couple other things (downpipe install and Opticoat) have been put on the back burner. When you say 'cut' it out, did you just saw it w/ fishing line or something?

Fishing line won't be strong enough... We use a razor

the thing under it is like... silicone rubber. It's VERY hard and not like double sided tape. a blade is needed to take it off. i wouldn't recommend trying to pry it off by force because the shark fin is plastic and there's a possibility of cracking.

Yea, I wonder if this is new for the F30. Others have reported of double sided 3m type tape or even that the fin just clips on. Strange.

They can wrap around it, its really not hard if they are good it will look perfect. Cut a hole and tuck under the edge. Most cars have antennas like this these days and most wraps go around them. You have to have a seam on the antenna itself anyway unless you are the stretch master but then it will just become unstuck. It's the same reason that you don't remove the door handles on this car to wrap. Just not worth the time and nothing ever reassembles the exact way it was from the factory.

I'm about a month from wrapping my own f30 again but I will try to take a picture of another car if I have to wrap around one of these again soon.
