Iphone 7 and text messages w Idrive/Navi

Does anyone know if this is possible to make this work or is it impossible with our cars?

I cannot for the life of me get my car to display my texts or emails.

I have a new iphone 7 with the latest software on verizon.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Step by step instructions would be fantastic if someone would be so kind.

Thanks guys.

In your phone:
- Go to Settings
- Open Bluetooth
- Press the blue circle "i" next to your car on the list
- Turn on Show Notifications
- Turn off Bluetooth in the car for 5 seconds then turn it back on

It should work at this point. Be sure not to have the text conversation open that you're testing. It only shows the newest text messages you haven't read yet.

Did you turn off Bluetooth and turn it back on? You need to for it to reset and work the first time. When you receive a text it should appear in "Office" under messages.

Enhanced Bluetooth is required. Do you have enhanced Bluetooth in your vehicle? This can be coded if you don't have it.

Also, when you pair your phone - you need to go to the Bluetooth options screen and make sure the office features are checked. So messages needs to be checked, and you can check contacts. If you don't do that - it will never work. I've got IOS 10.1 with iPhone 6 (which shouldn't be any different with Bluetooth than 7) - and it works fine. but as the previous poster mentioned - you do need enhanced Bluetooth.

I dont have an iPhone 7 but do have a 6. Ever since I took delivery of the car I couldn't get messages to work. I read through most of the post on here. Watched youtube videos. It sounds pretty easy but it didnt work. Last week I took my car in for the bmw assist retrofit...i'm sure with the recoding they had to do i'm sure that did something because now it magically works like its intended to. Dont ask me how because my settings were identical to what I always had set on the phone and on the car...

I actually figured it out last night finally with my BMW service manager. The auto group I work for has a bmw store.

If you don't have notifications for text messages on, and able to be read on your lock screen, the messages will not show up in the iDrive.

I hope this helps anyone having trouble.

Thanks for everyones suggestions.

I don't think it has been mentioned but iDrive will only let you view the text messages that you receive while the phone is connected to it. i.e. while you are in the car.

It's not a mirror of the message list like it is on your phone.

Correct; it does not download messages to vehicle so phone must be connected to pull messages.

Carplay only reads messages without letting you view on screen.
IDrive does both.

Have to have it connected for audio streaming. I suspect you could also achieve this by connecting an aux audio cable and playing your music that way. But in terms of hearing the text alert over Bluetooth, you'll need to be streaming audio from your phone and you'll of course need to make sure your phone isn't on silent.
