BMW would be crazy NOT to put the ZF 8-speed in the new 3. It is the cream of the crop of automatics.
Having said that, I'd rather gouge my eyes out with a spoon than drive a car with the ZF 8-speed. |

Drove the new X3 35i last week at the 'X3 Difference Event'. It had the same shift knob pictured above and the 8 speed A/T. The manual mode felt much more quicker and packed more punch that the 6 A/T on my 335i.

"8 speed is overkill" i got a powerglide sitting in the garage if you want to toss it in your car and tell me it's faster.

8 speed
My guess is the new 3 series, especially the 335 will have the 8 speed and the 335i will get around 35mpg with it while the awd counterpart will get 34. New fuel standards set in 08 sort of skew things a little. My 07 335i will get 32 or so on the hwy as long I am not going over 75.

This car’s transmission was uncharacteristically clumsy, its slow, rough shifts something we’ve not experienced before with the normally silky-smooth ZF eight-speed. Plus the usual rant about BMW's electronic steering.................... Are we 3ers in trouble here? |

in the fuel economy war most manufactures are trying to increase the MPG Using an 8sp across their model lineup reducing costs and increasing mpg is a no brainer. ppp

The 8 speed auto is near perfect!! It also provides start-stop function...best thing on the market. Smoother than the DTC in "surprise" downshifts

I have 6.5k miles on my F10 535d Sport Auto and in normal driving the gear shifts are seamless up and down the box. When really 'enjoying' the car they're certainly noticeable, but always smooth, extremely quick and very positive. Having said all that, I agree about the downside of EPS, but it looks as if it's here to stay in all but 'M' cars. I had the F12 640i on test all day yesterday and although the steering is very responsive whilst cornering, it has the characteristic EPS lack of feel on-centre. |

I am sure that the EPS issiues would be resolved, I have a `08 Tiguan 4Motion TDI with EPS and no problem with it, probably the front biased AWD is more informative than the RWD with EPS, but its all good 3 years already - auto park and so on.
But the 8 speed ZF auto is the real deal!!! I've drove the Aisin 8 speed auto (in the new Cayenne and Touareg) it is also fabolous, but the ZF in beemers unit is slightly better!!!
