Oil Temperture Before "Sport" / High-RPM Driving?
Hi all,
I have a 2013 335i RWD and find that I don't like to take the engine above about 4,000 RPM until the oil temperature is at least 200 degrees Fahrenheit or so. Does this fall in line with the most of you? I did read the owner's manual and it stated to follow something similar to this, but I don't think it gave an exact temperature. It's a shame as I'd love to run the engine up the on-ramp on the way to work but the engine is nowhere near 'warm' by that time, and I'm one who like to follow proper procedures. Thoughts? |

No, I wait only until the needle starts moving. Manual says to wait until ENGINE is warmed up, not oil. Engine is at operating temperature way before the oil. By the time the needle moves the engine is quite warm and the synthetic oil is definitely flowing quite well at this point.
I can't wait until I reach the mid-point for the oil because this can take a considerable amount of time, around 30 minutes. If I want to REALLY floor it then I wait for the oil but I'm not sure this is required at all. |

I run the N55 engine and many times run with live temperature data, using the hidden menu. I'm surprised how close the ECT and oil temperatures are during the warm up phase. Starting from cold say 45F, at the next village (3.5 miles), both ECT and oil temperatures are ~130F (55C). When the oil gauge moves off its stop 158F (70C in the UK) while I'm driving at 55 - 60mph, the ECT may just be a couple degrees higher at 160F. My run is quite easy, so by 11 miles the ECT and oil are virtually the same, within a degree or so at ~195F from the 45F ambient start. I'm used to diesels where the oil temperature can be literally miles behind in the warm up phase. It appears the oil cooling of the underside of the pistons in the N55 is highly efficient and that likely adds to faster oil heat up. I'm also surprised that oil temperature can overtake ECT before the engine is fully up to temperature. Seen that many times at various ambient temperatures. Anyone else run the hidden menu and noticed how close the two temperatures are during warm up? My engine, (in my driving conditions), the ECT is never more than 4C higher than oil temperature during any part of the warm up phase. So don't assume ECT is up to normal, just because the oil temperature is on the gauge. HighlandPete Last edited by HighlandPete; 04-28-2014 at 03:42 AM.. |

No, it ALWAYS operates but before the oil is warm the oil itself is thick and not flowing around good enough. That's the whole point of waiting til the oil is warm, for it to be able to lubricate and protect during heavy load etc. Unlike these guys I always wait til the OIL has reached its temp before revving past 3000 rpms.

Yes, the menu you can unlock using the sum of the last 5 digits of the VIN number.
Easiest to Google/YouTube "hidden menu" as there are videos of the unlocking process. I don't start the engine, I hold the odometer button ahead of pressing the start button (no foot on brake, so no start) cycle through to unlock (my code adds up to 11) on unlock, cycle to temperature. Gives raw, oil and ECT temperature, all on the same display in my 5-series. Start car and drive with the display active. See what you find for your engine, think you will be surprised how the temperatures rise. HighlandPete |

Typical JB4 install is inactive till 160 degrees oil temp. JB4 arming lights will blink as the needle starts to move.

I'll try the hidden menu and report back. My rationale is that a liquid like oil, which is relatively thick, has temperature inertia and therefore is going to take longer to reach high temps that the engine which is made of highly conductive aluminum.
My entire commute is made with the needle pretty much stuck at the bottom. I don't floor it, but I still have to go somewhere, right... Car still hasn't blown up. |

Personally, I just drive the car. It's a daily driver and most certainly was not built to rely on consumers following the letter of the manual to keep it from falling apart. It's built for it, drive it…….. Not suggesting you floor it from the second you leave your driveway on a daily basis, but I for one will never be checking my oil temp before deciding between accelerating onto a busy highway or getting crushed by a Mack truck.

Thanks for the feedback all. Good discussion.

I was watching a Jay Leno's Garage episode about his Countach and he said the most crucial element to all of his Lamborghinis is to let the fluids warm up before driving them hard. He's had no issues by following this practice but heard others would starve the engine of lubrication if hammering on it when cold. Yes, the N55 is no 1980s Lamborghini V-12, but the fundamental principal, to me, is the same. |

I try not to overcomplicate things. I wait around 10 minutes before switching to sport or using manual shifting. First 10 minutes I'm always in comfort and keep the revs <4k.

That's just it, the n55 was not designed nor intended to do what a lambo engine was. I'm not suggesting hammering it right away like I said, but I just don't think you have to watch the gauges. By the time you're on that on ramp, the car can handle some throttle. Would I recommend unloading it from a flatbed onto a track and beating the snot out of it as soon as it rolls off? Of course not

Again, thanks for the discussion all. Seems I'm probably being a bit overprotective but not completely.

For the long duration and performances of your N55s it's requiered a proper "warm-up" as will as a good "cool down".
Then you are free to floor after start up, but it is not a good idea |
