How much should a spare key fob replacement cost?

I've yet to call dealers around my area but just wanted to get a ballpark of how much is too much to get a replacement key fob. The car only came with one but I like to have a spare for emergencies.

I would say at least $300? Especially if you have Comfort Access. I never had to replace or get an extra key for my car.

Dang my car does have comfort access too. Looking forward to what some others have paid for their spare key.

Did you buy your car from a dealer? If so, ask them to make you another. I know my dealership would at no cost since our cars are supposed to come with 2 keys.

Look in to getting a used key, one that's been 'wiped'. You can find posts on how to mate a clean key to your car yourself, or pay a dealer $100 or so to do it.

If you bought the car new you should go back and request the 2nd key. They definitely come with 2 from the factory.

I recall a post where somebody said he bought a key cheap off eBay and was able to get it programmed for a small fee. Or maybe he just did the trick where you hold it against the steering column, not sure.

Otherwise conventional wisdom is to buy it from the dealer for around $300 as mentioned above.

This doesn't work. Don't buy a used key.

I can't say from personal experience. But this outfit seems to think it works:
http://www.keylessentryremotefob.com...ote-s/1821.htm

From what I understand it only works if the original codes have been wiped from the key. Only then it can be pared to a different car.

+1

They owe you another key. They come with 2 from the factory. They may try to charge you $ anyways, but I would try to fight that.

Fwiw, I remember another key for my e90 was quoted at about $200. I didn't have CA though, so >$200 is probably what a dealer will charge.

I have CA and paid exactly $296 for a new key delivered to my house from the dealer when I lost one of my keys. You can program it yourself in 10 seconds or pay the dealer another ~$100 for them to do it. Don't buy a used key...apparently only virgin BMW keys are able to be programmed using BMW's system. Also, a used key would not have the correct key blade for your car.

Not for the f30 but when I had my e90 it was $250 expedited shipping to the dealer. That car didn't have CA though. My guess would be $300. Don't buy used keys that doesn't work.

I just bought a used, wiped key from ebay for $150. It should be here by Friday. I'll let you all know if I can program it to my car.

Absolutely. Make the dealer explain why it's more with CA than without. Without CA, the key still is wireless as to the Start button--exact same technology as CA. Isn't the CA difference that the car has sensors in the door handles and trunk? Is there really a differnce in the key itself?

I was told $600 USD by my dealer a while back, with programming and everything.

I'd hit up the dealership. They should have supplied 2, even on a used car (I would expect that).

I find the pricing "humorous". You need the key, so they royally jack up the price. Heck, you can buy a brand new iPhone free and clear for less than some of those numbers. And it does more than transmit 3 button codes.

What world do people live in where it makes sense to buy a used car knowing it just has one key, sign the paperwork, drive away, and then later think they can go back to the dealer and get a second key at no cost because new cars come with two keys?

New cars come with lots of things that used ones don't. The time to insist on a second key was before the deal was done.

Depends on how long the OP has had the car, and what the dealership is like. It's probably a $50 cost item to them that they could throw in now "just because they want to keep you as a customer". Not saying that they have any really obligation, but I would try that first.
