New Tires & Rims For Winter !!!

Hey Guys,

15' 335 xdrive sport package.

So winter is nearing and I would like to get a square setup of 18inch 8.5 rims.

Looking for recommendations on the best Tires & tire size, Rims under $500 for 4. also Offset.

Thanks

I would probably go 18x8, with 225/45R18, either Blizzak WS80 or Michelin xIce. Or step up a bit to a performance winter Blizzak or Pilot Alpine.

Check tirerack for options.

The 225 width tires are stretched a bit on an 8.5" rim. If you insist on running 245 tires, the 8.5" is correct.

Most people go a bit narrow for winter, as you get better performance in snow/ice with more pressure per square inch to "bite" better.

Here's a setup that someone else in NYC is using: http://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1303540

Thanks alot floyd but not sure if half inch will be doing too much I just like how it looks better aswell.

As for 225 vs 245. Do you think the tire stretch would be a pro or con?

While narrow tires do go through deep snow better than wider tires, both tires will have the same pressure per square inch if they are filled with the same air pressure. The weight per square inch of any tire is always equal to the air pressure in the tire. Any tire inflated to 32 pounds per square inch, for example, presses down on the pavement with 32 pounds per square inch. The weight of the car is counter balanced by the air pressure in the tires on the surface so the pressure per square inch will be the same no matter how wide the tire. The shape of the contact patch is wider for the wide tire, but shorter. The shape for the narrow tire is longer but narrower. But both will have the same contact area. We keep hearing that you should use narrow tires for your winter tires, which is true if you will be driving in deep snow, but for most of us it really doesn't matter, because most of us drive in areas where the roads are plowed, or have enough traffic so that any snow is packed down.

I have no xdrive 328- Never used snow tires at all in northern nevada. Just in case, I want to get some. Don't know how they are used... Do you put them on for winter and leave them on all winter? I heard that if there's no snow that they wear faster (don't know if that's true). Info appreciated. Thank you.

While I agree with your statement, the pressure recommendation for the square setup 225/45R18 snow tires I have (on my E90 335d) are quite different from the staggered 225/40R18 & 255/35R18 summer tires. If you look at the recommendations (on p.186-8 in my wife's 328xd owners manual), the same disparity exists. Given that, I probably would be more careful in making any statement like yours.

I would insist you just get some cont. DW if anything. Especially in nevada , Work great in dry wet and some light snow. Awesome tires. Had them on my 2006 328 back in the day.

I appreciate this so much.

So I will stick to a 8.5 rim and maybe 245/40/18 tires. Not sure what tires Ill need for NYC. Continental DWS should do the job. Global warming been a bit sketchy though.

I'm really unclear about your statement. Why would the recommendations from your manual alter physics?

Because the PSI in individual tires is different - you posited the same pressure. Different pressure, different contact patch.

And how many of the people on this forum run the numbers in the manual. I sure don't. I adjust my tire pressures as needed for conditions. Problem solved.

225s are a little stretched even for 8 inch. 235 fits perfect for 8s. 245 for 8.5 and 255 for 9...so on..I would personally be going 235/45/18 on some nice gloss black 18x8 inch rims.

I disagree about 225 & stretched. 225 is the STANDARD width for E9x and F3x tires, and 8" is the STANDARD width for wheels on same. And 8.5 is the standard rear width for a staggered set with 255 rear.

Better to say you like the APPEARANCE of slightly bulging tires.
